Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (2000 characters or less)
If elected the commission chair for the 2016-2018 term, I will do my best to provide structure and direction to the commission. Since being appointed chair for the 2015-2016 term, I have established committees within the commission that focus on enhancing the scholarship of academic advising while providing professional development opportunities to commission members. These committees include a research team, an authorship team, and a webinar team. Promoting the area of online advising is the purpose of the commission. Networking opportunities will be available through the commission address book, which will allow commission members to network with advisors that have similar interests relating to the area of online advising. If elected, my goal is to continue to provide professional development opportunities for the commission and establish best practices for online advising that will help new and tenured advisors continue to be great at what they do.

Platform Statement: Part II

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (2000 characters or less)
I consider the fact that my colleagues ask me for help as an accomplishment on my part in the area of advising. To me, advising is not just reading a degree plan and recommending classes. It takes a good personality and personal motivation on the advisor's part to want to build a successful relationship with the student. I strongly believe that these relationships are tied to retention. When my colleagues ask me for direction on course selection, I provide my knowledge and insight to them so they can learn and be better advisors to our students. When my colleagues tell me that I consistently go above and beyond to help others, I, of course, smile and say thank you, but it makes my day. To me, advising is not a job. It is something I genuinely enjoy doing and not many can say that they are doing something they love to do and get paid for it!

Platform Statement: Part III

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (2000 characters or less)
At a past regional conference, I was approached by several individuals asking me how I advise online students effectively. I did not realize until then that the idea of online advising causes anxiety for some people. It is not very different than residential advising but people apparently think so. I realized that I wanted to share my knowledge of online advising with other advisors and the commission needed a leader.

Platform Statement: Part IV

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association.
One of my colleagues was giving me advice one day on leadership. A previous mentor of hers told her that people support what they help to create. My goal for the commission is simple.Through the list serv, blog, and webinars, I will elicit feedback from commission members on what we can do to make the commission stronger and at the forefront of online advising.  I hope to provide more information relating to the topic of online advising to advisors everywhere. The steering committee in place all have varying backgrounds and strengths in different areas. The same can be said about the hundreds of members we have in the Distance Education Advising Commission. I will ask for help from all of you in order to make this commission outstanding so please, feel free to share your ideas!

I have been advising for five years. During this time, I have advised both residential (on-campus) and online students. I have been actively involved in NACADA for two years. Prior to being named the commission chair, I served on the steering committee for the commission. I am the Executive Editor for the FLACADA Sunshine Times, the statewide advising newsletter for the Florida Academic Advising Association. I also am a mentee in the Region 4 Mentor-Mentee Program (which is similar to the NACADA Emerging Leaders Program). Aside from leading the commission meetings at the annual conference, I have presented a poster session on technology in online advising at a previous NACADA conference. My personal goal is to present at regional and national NACADA conferences in the future based on areas of interest within the commission.
