Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
My plan with this commission is to develop a group that discusses multi-cultural issues not only with our students, but within the profession of advising and higher ed.  We will discuss best practices, literature, and theory in regards to multicultural facets of our work.  I will work to offer webinars that have a multicultural aspect to it, to all NACADA members but specifically those interested in multicultural affairs.  At the regional and annual conferences I will work to organize commission meetings that cover topics such as DACAmented, undocumented, LGBTQ, Latino/a/x, African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, and other cultural groups that might feel they need a voice at NACADA.  Again, I will focus on students but also practioners so that we understand how to work with students but each other as well.

Platform Statement: Part II

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
I started by position as Director for the Student Success Center at Texas A&M University-San Antonio in fall 2015.  There was no actual Center and no other staff except for me.  I was able to grow the Center from myself to 5 success coaches, a Tutoring Center with a coordinator and 12 tutors, and a Testing Center with an Assistant Director, 2 Coordinators, and 3 testing specialists.  My Center mainly works with the freshmen class as well as students on academic probation/dismissal.  To be able to offer the services we do in the Center (time management, note-taking, test-taking, study skills, learning styles, and so much more) is a real asset to our students.  In fall 2016, we accepted our first freshmen class ever (501 students).  At the end of fall 2016, we had retained 87% of those students.  I feel that the Success Center was integral in that success rate.  I am very proud to have launched this office from the very beginning and be here to watch the growth.

Platform Statement: Part III

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
I have been on the Board of TEXAAN (Texas Academic Advising Network) in Texas as the Chair of Technology for two years.  I met a lot of great people and felt that it was a great experience.  I got to see how other colleges and Universities within Texas work together and independently.  I was also a part of the annual TEXAAN conference for those two years and gained valuable experience.  I have not been in a leadership position within NACADA, but feel I am the point in my career where I want to be involved nationally in my field.  I am passionate about student success and multicultural issues.  In my position at Texas A&M University-San Antonio, I work with DACAmented students and have a passion for students who might be in need of help but have no idea where to start.  I feel like I can make a difference within NACADA if I work as a commission chair.

Platform Statement: Part IV

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
Within NACADA, I will work to start a dialogue on multicultural concerns ranging from various populations.  I feel it is important to have a baseline knowledge of theories that can be attributed to students and I would work to disseminate this to the group.  I would also want to see that multicultural presentations are being submitted to NACADA.  I would make sure that access to multicultural webinars and professional opportunities were disseminated to those who are a part of the commission, but also to NACADA members as a whole.  Working with what are sometimes called "special populations" has never been new to Advising, so I want members to understand that I get that, but that I want to enhance what we are doing or show the membership how to maybe think differently when working with multicultural concerns.
