Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
"Promote the role of effective academic advising in student success to college and university decision makers" is a critical NACADA strategic goal for academic advisors and advising administrators globally.  When we look closer at some advising programs which tout progressive career ladders we see that there still exists a budgetary chasm between the profession of academic advising and other academic roles on campuses.  Many campus decision makers have begun to realize the benefit of developing and supporting an outstanding advising program.  Unfortunately, not all decision makers have the same strategic goals and understandably so with shrinking budgets, fewer students, and competition for research and teaching talent.  If elected Vice President, I will work diligently to help promote the contributions academic advising makes to student success.  I will share how NACADA helps prepare and develop advising talent that has a positive impact on student success.

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
As Region 5 Chair, it is my privilege to send letters to Presidents, Provosts, and supervisors when one of our members makes an outstanding contribution to the region.  I also send congratulatory messages to the leadership as a NACADA Summer Institute faculty member.  This practice, which started long before I assumed a leadership role in NACADA, has an immediate and direct impact for the advisors.  I regularly receive responses from the recipients and the advisors receive recognition on their campuses.  Promotions have occurred.  Recognition by one's peers sent to the right people can have career changing results.  It is so very satisfying to me to promote the outstanding work our members do for the Region and NACADA.  This work has a lasting impact for members of NACADA and deserves to be recognized.
As an advising administrator, I also enjoy celebrating the outstanding work the advisors with whom I work.  I make sure to recognize contributions and achievements and inform the senior...

Platform Statement: Part III

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
I have been a member of NACADA for 17 years.  I thoroughly enjoy the professional relationships and friendships have developed over the years.  I have received much more as a member and leader in NACADA than I have given to the organization. I have benefited by having a large professional organization in support in my career.  I have benefited professionally by the work I have done through NACADA.  Having said that, I believe that, with regards to academic advising, many institutions in higher education are holding on instead of moving forward.  With the challenges we face, advising has never been more critical yet on many campuses advisors are not given the respect deserved.  I am concerned with salary compression, modest job classifications, lack of career paths, and the tabling of the FLSA federal mandate.  If elected, I would work with the officers of NACADA to address these issues with campus leaders in hopes of planting seeds for change.

Platform Statement: Part IV

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
NACADA is a microcosm of our world.  We are The Global Community for Academic Advising in name, in vision, and in membership.  As a NACADA board member, I serve a diverse constituency; types of campuses, International members, multiple orientations, and belief systems.  We are an inclusive organization and proud of our differences.  Differences make us stronger, better, and richer in experience.  I would work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout and within the association by listening, inviting others to join NACADA and volunteer, offering friendship, working together on events and projects, recognizing the work of others, and sharing that with critical people on their campuses.  NACADA is a big family made up of all types and kinds of people.  We may not always agree but we work well together and we enjoy each other.  Inclusivity is a core value of NACADA, in practice and experience.  It is also in our DNA as academic advisors.  It is in our name and our culture. I mentor...
