1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
There are a few reasons why I am running for Administrative Division Rep, and how I think I can support the Division, and the organization as a whole. The first is that the Administrative Division has always been my “home” in NACADA. It is where my involvement in the organization has focused, and is an area that I am passionate and eager to contribute more to. I appreciate the work that is done in this division to better the organization and to make it more accessible to the membership. As a Canadian member of NACADA, I see the benefits this organization has on increasing the discipline of advising across the world and want to contribute even more to this charge. Finally, due to my current role at my institution, I have a particular interest (and strength) in strategic planning and social justice, which link directly to the strategic goals of the Association. My demonstrated dedication to the Administrative Division, and my experience in developing strategic priorities, benchmarks,...

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
Since moving to my current university four years ago, I have held a number of roles. A few years ago, I was seconded into a position which focused on the institution’s strategic priority of increasing retention. As part of my work in that role, I was a strong advocate and voice for increasing the importance of advising and looking strategically at how we provided advising on campus, both centrally, as well as working more collaboratively with the Faculties. Through this work, advising was deemed a priority, and as a result of a $2M donation, we were able to open a new advising centre. I was appointed into a new role, which included continuing to focus on the institution’s retention initiatives, as well as to oversee the advising component of this new centre. Since opening our doors in August 2017, I developed and led two weeks of professional development training for my staff, centered around competencies development. The team that I am working with is dedicated and committed to student success. They are enthusiastic and focused on student strengths. I am proud of the role I play in this team and am thankful for the opportunity to work with such committed colleagues who are working to change the face of advising at our institution.

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
Throughout my involvement in NACADA, I've always been a part of the Administrative Division. I truly believe that being an active member of NACADA has led me to where I am today and has been a strong influence in my participation in the field. As a result, I'm eager to give back and help others have as rewarding an experience as I did. When I first got asked to sit on the Diversity Committee, I wondered what I, a cis-gendered, white female, could bring to the committee. It was at that point that I began to understand NACADA’s mission of creating an organization that wasn't just “national” but “international” and ensuring that its leadership reflected its membership. Since that time, I have tried to be a voice for Canadian and international members. I feel that the resources, supports and information that NACADA provides is essential for all advisors, regardless of country. Sometimes, however, these messages can be lost if the right language is not used, or if the message appears...

I feel that the resources, supports and information that NACADA provides is essential for all advisors, regardless of country. Sometimes, however, these messages can be lost if the right language is not used, or if the message appears to be “centric” to one Country over the other. Being intentional about our language, words, etc. is really the first step in being an inclusive organization. When I first joined NACADA and started to become engaged, I was the “Canadian”, the one that always reminded people to not forget about Canada. However, I am committed to ensuring that NACADA is inclusive to all its members and feel that this is an area where I can continue to contribute and influence.

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
I believe the tenants of inclusivity have been woven throughout my application package as it is an area that I am extremely passionate about and have already been an active contributor to enhancing this mandate in NACADA. First, in my own lived experiences as a Canadian member, in what is still, primarily, a US-centric organization, I feel that I have been an advocate for NACADA in Canada. Through my involvement, I have helped others to recognize the importance of advising and the role that NACADA can play in increasing advisor competency and capacity. In the beginning of my involvement with the organization, my lens was narrow, with a focus specifically on helping Canadian NACADA members “see” themselves in the organization. However, it has expanded to be more encompassing, and consider how members from a variety of different groups are represented and heard within the association. I feel that my work on a wide variety of committees (Inclusion and Engagement, ELP, Sustainable Leadership),...

I feel that my work on a wide variety of committees (Inclusion and Engagement, ELP, Sustainable Leadership), provides me with breadth and depth of what is occurring from an inclusivity perspective within the Administrative Division. And in addition, my own continual growth in the areas of inclusivity and social justice can help move the organization forward in ensuring that we are consistent and authentic when we say we are fostering an inclusive and equitable organization.
