Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
My background and talents are most closely matched with NACADA’s strategic goals to provide professional development opportunities (#2), foster inclusive practices within the Association (#4), and develop and sustain effective Association leadership (#5). In just my first month as a board member, I have seen the commitment the Association and its leadership has to meet these goals, and yet there is a great deal of work still to be done. I have a proven ability to communicate effectively, which proves useful when facilitating the often-time-consuming work that is required to push for continual improvement in an association this size.

As VP, I would continue to work with the three divisions within the Council to ensure the implementation of the 2017 benchmarks. I am currently involved in the leadership of these initiatives and believe I can be a catalyst to help move these initiatives forward so we continue to serve all members. Last year, I served on the Professional Development Committee...

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
As part of the incredible work of NACADA for over a decade, I am particularly proud of my accomplishments within the Commission and Interest Group Division (CIGD). The CIGD has always been part of my path in NACADA: first, as a commission volunteer and chair, then as a CIGD steering committee member, and finally as the elected CIGD Representative. I believe my persistence and ability to move others to action have allowed me to accomplish a great deal in these roles.

During my time as CIGD Rep, I worked with other CIGD leaders to create a comprehensive Chair Handbook, revamp annual Chair training, and significantly improve the on-boarding and support for incoming chairs, steering committee members, and representatives – involving them from the moment they are elected/appointed to ensure smooth transitions as they take office each October. This year, I was able to lead a team of dedicated advising professionals and NACADA staff that created a successful proposal to restructure the entire...

Platform Statement: Part III

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
I have grown up professionally in NACADA. Even as an advisor working with a very specific population (disability services advisor), I was welcomed and given opportunities to give back to the field. Though my career has morphed over the years, the support and opportunities within NACADA have been my one constant. I have been exceptionally fortunate to present, write, and lead with NACADA, and want to use my background, experiences, and skills to continue to serve the Association and its members going forward.

As liaison to the Council, the VP ensures the Board is aware of discussions happening in the 3 divisions (Admin, Regional, Commission and Interest Group Division (CIGD)) and those serving those divisions on the Council are aware of the priorities of the Board. The role of the Council in the association is paramount. Members of the Council work tirelessly to meet the needs of members and to advance the field of advising. Currently, the Council has been charged with assessing all...

Platform Statement: Part IV

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
I am captivated by human beings – the amazing tenacity of spirt in each of our individual stories and the undeniable bonds that connect us. Because of this, I’ve always been attuned to notice who most often experiences injustice and who more often is provided opportunities. So, my NACADA path has always been closely aligned to initiatives focused on diversity and inclusivity.

As the Advising Students with Disabilities Commission Chair, I provided resources to advising professionals to improve their effectiveness with students on their respective campuses. During my appointment on the Diversity Committee, we worked to create a more inclusive environment for all NACADA members by altering wording on membership forms. As a participant, then mentor and 4-year Advisory Board member of the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP), I was part of efforts to revamp application and support materials to ensure members understand the true purpose of the ELP and that we were truly meeting that purpose....
