Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
As the Region 10 Chair, I will commit to continuing effective programming that promotes leadership development, scholarship of advising, and diversity and equity.  Such programming includes monetary support for conference travel and research initiatives; equitable opportunity through a democratic process to serve on the Region Steering Committee and various subcommittees, including the Diversity Subcommittee.

I will also ensure that our State and Campus Associations remain strong within our region with financial and practical support from Region 10.  I will work hard to make our conference events accessible through innovative video technology, in whole or in part, to folks who are unable to attend events in person.  Region 10 currently has the capability to host web events to provide continuing professional development to the region membership.  I will commit to hosting at least monthly brown bag discussions with varying topics of interest where advisors and administrators can discuss...

Platform Statement: Part II

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
As a past chair of the Two-Year Colleges Commission, I initiated round-table discussions at regional conferences throughout the country.  This initiative was in response to community college advisors asking for more opportunities to come together as a group at conferences.  We have been able to have several of these round-table discussions in most of the regions the past two years, including one at the NACADA Annual Conference in 2016.

I am currently serving on the COWY ACADA (Colorado and Wyoming Association) interim executive committee.  COWY ACADA had been dormant for the past few years, but the membership throughout Wyoming and Colorado have asked for this group to be active again.  The work of this interim committee has been tremendous thus far, establishing a communication plan that is continuing to evolve.  In March of 2018, we will be having the first COWY Drive-In Conference since 2013, an event I am co-chairing!

These examples demonstrate my ability as a leader to listen...

Platform Statement: Part III

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
I have served on the Region 10 steering committee for the last three years.  I have made very meaningful networking connections at our regional conferences with many of you, who I now call friends.  I have learned from most of you, I have laughed with some of you, and I want to continue these connections.  I know that money and travel are barriers to conference attendance, so I want to serve as the Region 10 Chair to lead the innovation charge to begin to eliminate these barriers to your professional development opportunities.  I want to create affordable and accessible opportunities for all of us to network through the technological resources that Region 10 and NACADA have.

Being a relator and developer is the influence for me to run for Region Chair.  I will continue to invest time and energy into the Region 10 mentoring program to develop sustainable leadership.  I will continue to listen to the professional development needs of all of Region 10 to always improve what we do as an...

Platform Statement: Part IV

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
I believe the membership of NACADA has made great progress in the realm of inclusivity.  As an example, over the last four years, I have noticed that the language of institution type has shifted away from “universities” to “schools,” “colleges,” or “universities and colleges.”  Not all of our NACADA members-especially in Region 10-work in a university setting.  We have a strong representation of community college advisors, tribal college advisors, and early college high school advisors in our region.  This shift in institution type inclusive language is a step in the right direction.  However, there is a lot of work yet to be done.

One area of growth I see is the need for events to incorporate Universal Design for Learning principles that accommodate all learners regardless of ability.  Examples would be to encourage the use of color schemes in presentations that all people can easily see and to insist that all presenters use a microphone so all participants are able...
