Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
I have been an active and engaged member of NACADA since 1995 when I began my career as an academic advisor at Western Illinois University.  Since that time, I have devoted much of my energy and time as a professional supporting the growth and development of myself, my colleagues, and young professionals who I have mentored and supervised.  NACADA has provided me with the support and motivation I needed to be a professional advisor engaged in the global advising community,
As Administrative Division Representative, I will commit myself to promoting the goals NACADA developed for the profession.  I will help to guide the Administrative Division and provide leadership and support to the committee chairs to ensure they have the tools they need to do their work, help to motivate colleagues, and identify ways to support the work of the division while ensuring responsive and thoughtful communication among the chairs, the board, fellow council members and the executive office.  In addition,...

Platform Statement: Part II

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
The most impactful experience for me professionally is to be the current NACADA Professional Development Committee Chair.  In 2015, NACADA leadership charged us with developing the Academic Advising Core Competencies.  Our committee needs were great but with the help and guidance of the Executive Office, we were able to research, identify, and develop the guide book explaining the Core Competencies.  Advisors and advising administrators now possess a NACADA document providing a blueprint to help them develop and map their training and development offerings with the goal of ensuring that advising systems and advisors are competent in areas needed to do their jobs and serve their students.
The process was complicated because of the magnitude and scope but I felt it was my responsibility to keep people motivated and organized and navigate and negotiate with the various constituencies connected directly and indirectly to the project.  Communication was key and with the help of Leigh Cunningham,...

Platform Statement: Part III

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
My primary reason for accepting the nomination for Administrative Division representative is to give back to NACADA and my colleagues.  The support and guidance that NACADA and its activities provided me over the years helped me to develop as a professional and understand the value the academic advising process.  The people who are a part of the NACADA family provided me with the ability and knowledge base to be competent in my career as an academic advisor and now as an advising administrator.  Without the training and professional development I experienced through the many conferences I have attended, the mentoring I have received from countless colleagues and members of the advising community, and the opportunities for me to provide support and guidance to new professionals, my own development as a professional would be lacking. In this leadership role, my intention is to serve the organization in an enthusiastic way while helping to identify resources within NACADA to help move our...

Platform Statement: Part IV

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
I will promote inclusivity within NACADA by helping to identify people from underrepresented backgrounds who could potentially be interested in serving in leadership roles within NACADA.  At every opportunity and on every committee, those in leadership need to ask the question and consider if all groups and backgrounds are represented.  If they are not, it must be a priority to do the work required to identify potential leaders and mentor emerging leaders (either through the ELP Program or informally) to ensure that emerging leaders have the tools and support needed to be successful.  I think NACADA needs to continue to provide a place for people from various backgrounds to gather and discuss leadership opportunities within the profession and within professional networks and organizations they work with.  Understanding and increased awareness, and programs and services designed to support an inclusive environment, is a NACADA core value.  We need to continue to challenge and support each...
