Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
I believe that one of the greatest strengths of Region 4 is the closeness (geographic and in spirit) of the members. My goal as region chair would be to bring the members into an ongoing dialog in which we celebrate one another's strengths and learn from our shared experiences. I am very excited about growing the body of scholarship in the field, and would love to see Region 4 take a leadership role in both the theory and practice of advising.

Platform Statement: Part II

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
Although I have been an active NACADA member for a relatively short time (since 2012), I was humbled to be given the opportunity to Chair the 2016 Conference in Atlanta. The logistics of such a far-reaching event taught me a great deal about the importance of collaboration and the value of great teamwork (and of course, how amazing the folks in the National Office are!). 2 years of planning, nearly 4,000 attendees, 4 hotels (plus the aquarium!), a conference committee of 30+ spread across much of the region, hundreds of concurrent sessions, and it all came together for a few days in October. I'm so grateful for the people on that team, and I learned a great deal by working so closely with them. The leader may set the tone, but the team as a whole brought the conference to life. I learned that a good leader needs to listen as much or more than s/he talks, and to respond to the ever-changing needs of the group we serve.

Platform Statement: Part III

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
I was humbled to be nominated, and would love to continue the good work of the chairs that preceded this year. Academic advising as a profession has never been more in the spotlight on our campuses and as part of the national conversation on student success, and I hope to elevate the conversations on those campuses that are just beginning to realize the value of the work we do.

Platform Statement: Part IV

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
Just as our students bring great diversity of thought, experience, and background to our offices and our classrooms, so too must the advisors and administrators in NACADA bring a rich diversity of perspectives and abilities to the Region. My hope would be to honor those voices from institutions that are prosperous as well as those that struggle with limited resources and access;  to recognize and embrace the diversity of perspectives our students experience through advising; to recognize that students are complex people with myriad dimensions and priorities, and that their struggles and potential for greatness extends far beyond the academic. Advisors too benefit from constant reinforcement of the notion that one size, model, mindset, technique, or approach will not work for all.
