Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
For the purpose of expanding the scholarship of academic advising, I will be encouraging all SCUC members to submit conference proposals, articles, and to engage in research opportunities not limited to but relevant to the unique challenges and opportunities of small schools. I will encourage SCUC members to take advantage of NACADA resources for professional development, including scholarships, grants, and regional awards. As in all NACADA settings, the SCUC will continue to provide an inclusive environment in which diversity and idea sharing are encouraged and appreciated. Because of my deep commitment to NACADA, and inherent connection with the SCUC, I'm confident that I can sustain effective Association leadership. I'm excited to gain a more in depth perception of the Association via the opportunity to chair the SCUC, from where I'll be able to offer a more informed perspective when assessing many facets of the Association. In the process, I will certainly be exploring and utilizing...

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
On my own campus, I've increased NACADA involvement significantly by bringing with me 5 advising colleagues to two different conferences this year, one of which has become involved in the NACADA Region 5 Mentoring program, and two more having collaborated with me on a poster presentation at the Region 5 Conference. At my previous institution, where I was the only professional advisor and NACADA member, I relied heavily on my connections in the association for professional engagement and scholarly discussions. I've had few greater pleasures than introducing like-minded colleagues to this wonderful association and getting them excited about the various opportunities NACADA affords it's members, including potential opportunities for leadership & involvement. I believe this demonstrates leadership in that it not only shows my passion for and commitment to NACADA and the advising field in general, but also my ability to rouse interest in scholarly endeavors and subsequently expand NACADA membership...

Platform Statement: Part III

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
I've been so passionate about NACADA, from the moment I applied ot the K-State Graduate Advising program, to my first conference in Minneapolis wherein I fortunately found myself in the SCUC meeting, to today as an accomplished presenter and writer in the field. In the SCUC, we say, "If you feel small, then you're welcome here." When I first joined the SCUC, I was at a school of 500, but have since moved to an institution of 5000. I still feel small, and therefore still feel right at home in the SCUC, where I've gained lifelong friends and partners for research and presentation collaborations. I can think of no greater honor in my blossoming NACADA career than to accept the position of Chair of the Small Colleges & Universities Commision. My colleague and current SCUC chair, Wiona Porath, recognized my qualifications for this position and therefore nominated me. I'm very grateful that she saw in me a desire to increase my NACADA involvement and assist the association in a leadership position.

Platform Statement: Part IV

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
Simply put, I like to have fun. Openness and inclusiveness are inherent to me, as I set out to make new friends everywhere I go. My involvement with NACADA, and work in higher education, have introduced me to so much diversity among advising professionals and our roles in higher education. I truly believe each one of us has invaluable perspective to offer our colleagues, and therefore will continue to support inclusivity, as well as scholarship in the field for the purpose of idea sharing from diverse backgrounds and view points. I'm so grateful to those that have shown me kindness and acceptance in the Association, and am truly thrilled about an opportunity to further promote these NACADA attributes from a leadership position.
