Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
If elected to the DAFOE commission chair, I hope to lead several initiatives to help increase the support that the commission is able to provide to its members.  I hope to continue to be able to network with commission members to create and sustain a strong steering committee that can help me, help the commission.  In my experience, the work of a commission is never completed by one person alone, and the value of the members working alongside me (steering committee, or not) will stay in the forefront of my mind.  Specific initiatives include creating supporting documents, leading strategic discussions and providing continuous improvement opportunities regarding the intricacies and best practices of advising from a distance for online programs.  Overall, my initiatives for the commission will surround the idea of helping to support advisers that are new, and those advisers continuing their work, in distance advising for online programs.

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
Recently, with the increase of enrollment for our online programs at Logan University, there was even more of a need to support and prepare students as they began online education.  With the support of our academic technology department, I was able to create an interactive online orientation via our learning management system, Canvas that includes videos, real examples, and live feedback as they work through the requirements.  This orientation is in place to provide students a glimpse inside what they could expect to see in their online courses and prepare them to be successful in online education at Logan.  The orientation provides an overview of the University, tutorial and training sessions on how to navigate their online classroom, information regarding student resources; like how to schedule virtual tutoring, along with small preparation modules regarding success skills like time management and study tips.  Specifically, this example demonstrates that I can lead efforts of continuous...

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
When entering my current position 3 years ago, it was a brand new position, with limited structure and guidelines—a blank pallet, so-to-speak.  I was entering an advising position for a newly formed online college with 4 small programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels.  I felt overwhelmed and under qualified for what I was getting into and was looking for support in this new role.  I joined NACADA just a few months into my position, and immediately found guidance and confidence from working with a few individuals who held leadership positions at the time.  The feeling of security that I was able to receive from NACADA members made a huge difference in what I was able to accomplish in my first year in the position, and gave me the confidence to get more involved and pay it forward in the future.  A leadership position, and specifically as the DAFOE commission chair, would solidify the opportunity for me to be able to give back in a similar capacity that was provided to me.

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
No matter the situation, each time I meet someone new within the NACADA association, they bring a lifetime of experiences, perceptions and knowledge to the table.  As an on-going effort to increase inclusivity throughout the commission/association, I plan to ask for and welcome ideas that are different than my own, be willing to learn and accept feedback, and to hear and react to concerns of those around me.   I will also make it clear in my communication and actions that everyone’s opinion, no matter how big or small, is meaningful and appreciated.

Past Involvement in NACADA

5. Outline your past involvement in NACADA:
     a. Years in NACADA
     b. National Offices Help and Accomplishments Achieved

A. I have been a member of NACADA since 2015.
B.  I have been a member of the DAFOE commission since joining NACADA, and in 2016 was appointed to a steering commission position.  In the beginning of 2017 I was apart of the group that helped change the name of the commission to more closely align with our mission and goals.
