Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
If elected, I want to hear from Commission members as to what they want from the Commission.  Assessing needs of members is important to me.  This is a member-driven organization and the more we can help our members take ownership, the better.

It will be important to me to find ways to encourage members to communicate the scholarship of academic advising.  I will encourage Commission members to write for NACADA, present at conferences or submit to do a webinar. This encouragement can be accomplished through a variety of sources - email, social media, and through the steering committee.  Communicating the scholarship of advising can also be as simple as sharing articles of interest through social media.

I will encourage members to share ideas at regional, national, and international conferences for how they promote the role of effective academic advising to decision makers on their campus.  This is especially helpful to newer administrators; we want the Commission to be a place...

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
I was asked to be part of the annual conference planning committee for the 2017 annual conference in St. Louis.  My role was Concurrent Sessions Chair.  In this role, I had the opportunity to read a large number of proposals and summarize comments for the proposal writers.  I read thoroughly and gave constructive feedback in hopes that proposal writers would learn something from the process, even if their proposal wasn’t accepted.  I also had the opportunity to work with colleagues from the Executive Office and a variety of other institutions.  The week of the conference it was all hands on deck.  No task was too small and we did whatever needed to be done to make sure the conference was a success for participants.

I am proud of my contributions to this group effort because I worked hard, supported my teammates, and had fun.  I think every aspect of my work on this committee demonstrates my abilities as a leader.  I am a big picture thinker and I contributed to our discussions to...

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
I have become more involved in NACADA over time and it has been such a benefit to me, both personally and professionally.  I now have close colleagues from across the nation who I can turn to when I have questions, need ideas, or support.  As I have become involved in the Association, I have developed a better sense for how things work and I know that in order for an association this large to be successful, it requires many leaders from within. This experience with NACADA has influenced me to seek a leadership role.  Advising administration is near and dear to my heart and I want to help others fully benefit from NACADA and the resources available.  Through my work in my own advising unit as well as my work with a campus-wide and state-wide advising association, I have developed skills that will help me to effectively organize the Advising Administration Commission and help members get the most of their experience.  One of my responsibilities at my own institution is advisor development...

Platform Statement: Part IV

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
Inclusivity is important to me and I am proud to be part of an organization that values this.  I am the type of leader who likes to reach out and include people and to make them feel welcomed and valued.  I would do this through in-person activities at the annual conference as well as through other opportunities online throughout the year.  I envision a Commission meeting at annual conference where we enjoy re-connecting with colleagues we know but also have the opportunity to connect with new ones.  It is important to me that a person new to the Commission feels like they have a safe place to share their experiences and seek advice.  I would ensure that this happens by creating ways to ask members to spend a few minutes talking with someone they don’t  know and to exchange cards to set the state for ongoing conversations.

I think an important topic of conversation for advising administrators is how do we encourage leadership among diverse populations on our campuses.  As a Commission,...
