Platform Statement: Part I
1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
If elected to Region 8 Chair, I plan on soliciting feedback from Region 8 members regarding what their needs are and how we can best address our strategic goals. Methods for doing so include time for discussion at the annual association meeting, utilizing social media, and visiting colleges when possible. While I intend to create a Region 8 plan to meet the strategic goals based on this information, there are some I ideas that I have already. My ideas for enhancing inclusivity within the region (one of my top priorities) are listed in part IV of the platform statement. For the strategic goal, Expand and Communicate the Scholarship of Advising, I will provide opportunities to share and discuss the advising scholarship being produced within Region 8. When a Region 8 member publishes in the NACADA Journal, I will set up a webinar with the author to discuss the topic. In addition, I will create a Region 8 working group of advisers writing their theses/dissertation or just interested in scholarship....

For the strategic goal, Provide Professional Development Opportunities that are Responsive to the Needs of Advisors, I will create of list of advisers who are interested in presenting at other universities and the topic of their expertise. When colleges have an opportunity to bring in an outside speaker, they could refer to this list. Finally, I will establish a quarterly book/article discussion group.

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
I am most proud of leading the effort to create the NACADA Region 8 Diversity & Social Justice (now Inclusion & Engagement) Coordinator role and being the first person to serve in this position. The Region 8 Steering Committee had talked for a few years about how we would like to: 1. increase the diversity of our membership and 2. provide more opportunities for advisers to discuss and learn how to best work with students from underrepresented populations. While we all had great ideas, there was no one who was specifically tasked with overseeing these efforts. Thus, I helped create this position which would be responsible for spearheading diversity initiatives within the region. During my tenure in this position, I established a Diversity (now Inclusion & Engagement) Committee which has members from a variety of institutions and backgrounds. This past year, I have worked with the Region 8 Conference Chairs to designate specific Diversity Committee sponsored sessions at the regional conference...

In addition, I visited Minority Serving Institutions such in order to encourage their participation in NACADA as well as learn how Region 8 can better serve their needs. These accomplishments demonstrate my ability to take action when needed (creating the coordinator position) while also recognizing the importance of eliciting feedback regarding what issues are important to others.

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
2008: The year I became a NACADA member. I attended my first annual conference in Chicago and was completely overwhelmed. However, I was soon grateful for the friendly and welcoming advisers I met who provided me with guidance and support.
Lesson: NACADA is family.
2008-2010: I served as the Chair of the Large Universities Interest Group and was a co-founder/chair of the Advising Second-year Students Interest Group. For the former, I set up monthly email discussion sessions for the members to participate in.
Lesson: NACADA is a great professional resource.
2012: I decided to run for the Washington state liaison position for NACADA Region 8. While serving in this position, the other state representative and I decided to visit seven community colleges to encourage their participation in NACADA. They shared with us great ideas of how NACADA can be more inclusive.
Lesson: NACADA is continually growing and changing to meet the needs of advisers.

2014: Through the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP), I was mentored and learned from current NACADA leaders how to lead by example.
Lesson: NACADA is only as strong as its members.
2017: Due to these experiences and the subsequent lessons I’ve learned, I am running for the position of NACADA Region 8 Chair. I am proud to be part of this association, and I will work to build upon what I've learned to improve communication and collaboration amongst advisers in Region 8.

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
I will build upon my work as the Inclusion & Engagement Coordinator in promoting the enhancement of inclusivity throughout the association. At the next Region 8 conference, members of the Inclusion & Engagement Committee hope to hold a session soliciting feedback on how the region can be more inclusive and responsive to all advisers needs. I will utilize this feedback to create goals for how to promote the enhancement of inclusivity within the association. In the meantime, one idea that the committee agreed upon was to create more online and in-person opportunities to discuss resources and best practices for supporting both underrepresented advisers and underrepresented student populations. From a designated website with applicable resources to quarterly discussions on relevant research articles, there are plenty of ways to get the conversation started on how we can learn from each other and work together to create a more inclusive environment.
