Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
If elected chair of the research committee I will continue the work toward the following:
• Expanding and communicating the scholarship of academic advising
• Foster inclusive practices within the Association that respect the principle of equity and the diversity of advising professionals across the vast array of intersections of identity
I think that there are areas where the research committee can serve all of the strategic goals, but I think these two are particularly important in in tune with the mission of the committee.  There are growing opportunities within the association for research, and a need for thoughtful leadership to realize those opportunities.  I would welcome the opportunity to be an integral part of the impact NACADA can have through promoting research.
Specifically, I will try to bolster the membership of the research committee with varied representation.  I think we are in a good place, but can always do better.  I will also seek to continue the work of clarifying...

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
I am proud of my work as a doctoral student and full time advising professional on my campus.  For the last seven years, I have demonstrated my commitment to practitioner scholarship by slowly working my way through an Ed.D program on my campus.  It has introduced me to a world of ideas and tools for understanding organizations.  It has caused me to develop habits like waking up at 4a.m. consistently to balance work, study, and family.  It has kept me grounded in the experiences of being a student in ways that have helped me better relate to my students (even though they are undergrads).  Most importantly it has given me the structure and the skills to live out the value that I have for practitioner-scholarship and NACADA’s core value of Commitment.  It will be a proud day when I finish the degree in 2018.

Platform Statement: Part III

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
I am choosing to run for the research committee chair because as a member of the committee since 2014, I see the impact that the committee can continue to have within the association.  In particular, I appreciate that the committee has a great balance of established defined tasks but at the same time has so much opportunity to grow.  I was encouraged by several colleagues to run for the chair-ship, and would consider it such an honor to lead a group of such intelligent and thoughtful folks.  I also want to continue the openness of how we define scholarly inquiry championed by some past chairs.  An openness which is vital for the ongoing development of NACADA as an association and advising as a field.

Platform Statement: Part IV

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
I firmly believe that NACADA’s strength as an association is directly proportionate to the diversity and inclusivity of its membership.  If we are to understand our students and our institutions, their uniqueness, their power, their experiences of oppression, then we must be a place where ideas are incubated and shared.  I have tried to make this a part of my leadership within the association.  My experiences in the Emerging Leader’s Program brought the strength of this diversity into sharp focus.  My work within my own region to bring in leaders from diverse backgrounds is evidence of this commitment.  I will endeavor to bring that same thoughtfulness to the work and composition of the research committee.
