Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
A great deal of work is being done to advance NACADA’s strategic goals. I believe I can make contributions related to four of them.

In support of goals 2 (provide professional development opportunities that are responsive to the needs of members) and 4 (fostering inclusive practices) I will work to continue the development of professional development opportunities beyond NACADA’s Annual and Regional conferences. This will allow the Association to continue to serve the varying needs of our diverse membership – many of whom are unable to attend conference events.

In relation to goal 5 (develop and sustain effective Association leadership) I will support efforts to provide clear, accessible pathways to leadership throughout NACADA. Excellent work has been done in this area, and members of the Board can advance that work to provide transparent processes and opportunities for aspiring leaders and disseminating that information through multiple mechanisms. Additionally, I will continue...

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
In my current role as Region Division Representative (RDR) to NACADA’s Council, I represent region needs to the Board of Directors and support the Region Chairs. I am proud that I have brought organization, clear communication, and a solutions-focused mindset to the role.

NACADA’s regions are vibrant, engaging a many leaders to serve the needs of members. Supporting ten Region Chairs as they implement goals, manage budgets, coordinate regional conferences and state/province-based events, maintain region leadership, and engage thousands of members is a major effort. Two members of the Executive Office Staff, my fellow RDR and I lead this effort. I have been complimented on my ability to keep projects and processes organized and on track, and for developing clear, useful materials. This year we’ve been able to overhaul the training process for Region Conference Chairs increasing accessibility and allowing deeper coverage of topics. We’ve created an annual timeline to help Region...

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
I am interested in serving on the Board of Directors because my experience and skills that have prepared me to contribute meaningfully to the association.

My leadership experiences in NACADA include serving as a Region Conference Chair, as Chair of Region 8, and in my current position on NACADA’s Council.  Council members attend meetings of the Board of Directors and are often tasked with implementing programs and projects at the request of the Board. The opportunity to watch and learn from the current Board over the past year has been extremely valuable, and served as an excellent orientation to the work of a Board member. I’ve seen the hard work being done by the Board, and appreciate the level of professionalism and commitment its members demonstrate.

As an active NACADA member of 14 years, I have built an understanding of the association and connections to many groups and members within it.  Holding a variety of leadership positions has allowed me to hear input from members...

Platform Statement: Part IV

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
As a leader, it is important to support the work of your team, and that is especially true with the enhancement of inclusivity.  No one person can fully anticipate or meet all needs across NACADA.  When a member of our Region Steering Committee approached me about ways to demonstrably improve our work equity efforts, I took her suggestion seriously.  With her guidance, and in consultation with others who had successfully addressed similar needs, we developed a Diversity & Social Justice Coordinator position. I am very proud that this new position was created while I was Region Chair. This example illustrates how I will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity in NACADA:  I will ask questions, listen thoughtfully, consult those with greater expertise to determine the best way forward, and see it through.

The challenge is greater at the level of the Board of Directors. The membership grows and needs diversify. That’s a strength and a challenge for NACADA.  How do we create programming...
