Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
If elected to the Board of Directors, I have the opportunity to champion for academic advising at all levels -- across the world and within and across institutions and for individual advisors and administrators -- in the following ways that support the strategic goals of association:

* professional development opportunities for advisors and advising administrators across the globe by continuing to create cost-effective, needs-based experiences in a variety of formats. Our global growth must continue to reach advisors and institutions who can both utilize NACADA's resources AND contribute to the growth and development of the field of academic advising.

* continued examination of our practices and barriers and how we embrace the growing diversity of voices and experiences of our advising community, including them in the many conversations, resources, services and events around academic advising, including the students and communities we serve and the community that we are.

* expansion...

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
I am most proud of my partnership with Sandra Waters (Old Dominion University) to facilitate five consecutive years of annual conference panel presentations entitled "Women Thriving: Not Just Surviving a Career in Academic Advising/Higher Education". The idea was born out of a conversation we had shortly after meeting in 2009 about juggling our roles as advising administrators with our family responsibilities. The panelists were women in administrator roles at their respective institutions who have also served NACADA in various leadership roles (including several past presidents and members of the Board of Directors) who shared their stories about "climbing the ladder" in their careers and in leadership roles, completing doctoral degrees, changing institutions, balancing personal and professional responsibilities, embracing self-care, being mentored and serving as mentors. Each year we presented, the session was well attended and well received. On the post evaluation of the 2012 annual...

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
In the past nine years I have been at three different institutions in three different states, and NACADA has been a constant in my professional experiences. Through the transitions, NACADA colleagues never hesitated to put their time and energy into helping me make connections, giving feedback and lending an ear, and providing resources and opportunities when I needed them (and not necessarily because I was seeking them). Additionally, as a current Council member, I am involved in many of the discussions and decisions that further the mission of the association and the steps we are taking to realize our goals. Serving on the Board would extend my involvement in the initiatives that we're currently undertaking and being directly involved to see them to fruition. It also represents my personal commitment to give back to the association that has given so much to me and my professional commitment to further academic advising as a field.

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
I had the opportunity to co-facilitate the project to re-write NACADA's diversity statement this past year. During this process, a NACADA colleague shared Verna Myer's quote, "Diversity is being invited to the party; inclusion is being asked to dance", which has stuck with me ever since. I believe that we need to continually to ask ourselves and each other who have we invited and accepted into NACADA and who we have not yet embraced into our community, intentionally or unintentionally. More importantly, we must constantly ask if we are empowering those individuals and groups to be active contributors and leaders in our initiatives, projects, events, resources, scholarship, leadership, etc. and find ways to do so. I will continue to work to engage individuals and institutions who are not represented well or at all in our membership and leadership demographics, including those who have never been NACADA members and those who have lapsed in their membership -- and therefore may be unrepresented...
