Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
Immediately after becoming Chair of this Advising Community in October 2017, I created several goals for us to work on for the next year. Our goals address NACADA's strategic goals of 1) developing and sustaining effective Association leadership, and 2) providing professional development opportunities responsive to the needs of advisors and advising administrators. Our goals for this year include: Create active steering committee; Hold social event at 2018 Annual Conference in Phoenix; Increase Community membership to 500 (417 as of 9/12/17); Lead the submission of a pre-conference session at the Annual Conference; and have at least two sessions proposed to Annual Conference that have interest and co-presenters from another Advising Community. Many of these goals were discussed at the business meeting at the St. Louis Annual Conference, and others were created to give a stronger "behind the scenes" foothold for future leaders.

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
At a previous employer, where I served as the Director of Academic Advising, the university president charged me with moving the college from a mainly staff-led advising model to a predominately faculty-led model. I undertook significant negotiations and in-person meetings with Deans, Faculty Senate, the Provost, Department Chairs and select faculty in non-supervisory positions. I believe that my ability to navigate these extremely tough political waters and to create “win-win” scenarios is one of the reasons why the model succeeded as well as it did. To make this succeed, I needed to understand and master several additional pieces of the college landscape that were not on face value relevant to my immediate position, such as the inner workings of faculty contracts, rank and promotion guidelines, academic catalog deadlines and processes, and co-writing two papers for the Higher Learning Commission.

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
I am very pleased to be submitting my name for consideration for a full term as the Chair of this Advising Community. I was asked to serve as the Chair of the Advising Students with Disabilities Advising Community right after the St. Louis Annual Conference and will be Chair until October 2018. If elected, I would be thrilled to continue this momentum for another two years. I decided to run for Chair when my service as a board member and President of the Ohio Academic Advising Association (OHAAA) would be ending. I decided that this was the best time for me to serve on the national level and to also call attention to the issues facing students with learning differences and accommodations as well as the advisors who assist these students.

Before coming to Defiance College as the Registrar, I worked at Siena Heights University as the Director of the TRIO Student Support Services program. TRIO SSS programs serve low-income, first generation and/or students with disabilities. Our office...

Platform Statement: Part IV

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
This Advising Community, by definition, works to empower advisors to support students that provide a rich diversity to our colleges and universities. The members of this Community are also diverse - ranging from being the direct provider of accommodations to faculty members who are interested in learning more about a population of students that they work with on a regular basis. I will continue to support and promote our Community to everyone in NACADA to solicit presentations and input from advisors that work with these students in very different capacities. Our steering committee will be intentional in how we make our community diverse, offering material and professional development to diverse audiences, and to also push issues of diversity and inclusion influencing NACADA members.
