Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
If elected to serve as a member of the Board of Directors, I plan to support the strategic goals of NACADA in a variety of ways.

Expand and communicate the scholarship of academic advising: For some advisors, I believe that aspect of our profession is potentially overwhelming.  I hope to assist in demystifying that process by continuing to connect individuals interested in scholarly inquiry with various NACADA writing opportunities, formats and others skilled in this area for support, specifically with the NACADA Center for Research at Kansas State University.  In my role as chair of the Advisor Training & Development commission, we embarked in an effort to increase manuscript submissions from commission members to NACADA’s Academic Advising Today: Voices of the Global Community in a deliberate effort to support this goal.

Develop and sustain effective Association leadership: Leadership pathways for those with an interest in association engagement can continue to be articulated...

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
During the years I was in titled leadership within the advising organization (University Advisors & Counselors - UAC) on the campus of Texas A&M University, the campus implemented new advising software (Banner, called “Howdy” and COMPASS at Texas A&M University).  As President-Elect and then President during the transition to this software, I attended numerous meetings related to this software and the campus implementation strategy, which ultimately took place during the year of my presidency.  During this time, I relied on my officer team, executive board members, and other highly knowledgeable advisors to assist with the software transition; implementing a transition of that nature was a job too large for any one individual.  I believe that this transitional era demonstrated my ability to work effectively with a team and accomplish a set goal, as well as work with individuals who were reluctant to transition and learn a new system.

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
I am currently serving as a Steering Committee member for the Advising Communities Division (formerly known as the Commission and Interest Group Division), and recently completed my term as the Commission Chair for the Advisor Training & Development Commission (2015-2017) and was previously the Advising Graduate and Professional Students Commission Chair (2013-2015).  I am also involved in the administrative division, as I serve on both the Webinar Advisory Board (2015-2019), and the Professional Development Committee (2015-2018).

I am passionate about NACADA, its mission and I believe that shows in my past and ongoing involvement.  I have been encouraged to continue to pursue leadership opportunities within NACADA and was fortunate to be nominated for this position.  I am blessed to have an incredibly supportive work environment, and with the strong support of my department, gladly accepted the nomination for Board of Directors.

There are so many talented individuals working in a...

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
Inclusion of a wide array of perspectives and backgrounds related to advising is crucial to the betterment of our profession as a whole and us as individuals.  Involving advisors from a variety of institutional types and backgrounds as well as those who work with diverse populations of students to engage in the conversation, work, strategic goals, and within the leadership of NACADA will strengthen our association.
