Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
I believe strongly in the mission of NACADA and would appreciate the opportunity to further our strategic goals.
Expanding and communicating the scholarship of academic advising is core to everything we do. We must actively promote scholarship and professional development at all times. I am excited by the changes that have come through the former “CIG” division this past year. I hope we can continue to look for improvements within our own division. Somehow the amazing work of the administrative division is often unknown and I want to find a way to highlight that work, invite others to share in the development of our goals and achievements, and continue leading in the fields of scholarship and professional development.
The last area that resonates with me is the ability to develop and sustain leadership with NACADA. I believe there are equally important goals of having leaders with a historical perspective to understand the past and present, and also having leaders that bring in fresh...

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
In May 2017 I was surprised to receive the "Outstanding Academic Advising Administrator" award from our advising association within UNT. To be honored as a peer of those I have looked up to for so many years was very unexpected. This award was significant though because it meant, to me, that I had the support of those I work with. I am still learning, still trying to be a better person, a better co-worker, and a better supervisor, and that they are with me on this journey.
I hope the same might one day to true of my NACADA journey. The person I was when I attended my first conference in 2002 is a very different person than who I am today. Some of that is age, some hopefully a little wisdom. I believe I have learned better to listen instead of talk (sometimes) and to not try and “solve” every problem when sometimes the solution is not really the desired result. For me those kinds of development are what I hope will make me a better leader in everything I attempt and I hope to include...

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
This question is easy. I have always liked knowing the ins and outs of everything; knowing why this decision is made instead of that decision and what all the possible repercussions are. I like details and puzzles and planning and all of those “things” seem to fit well with the role of the NACADA council. I believe I have spent enough years learning about the organization and seeing its strengths, and now I want to be a part of leading the next generation of leaders to leadership roles within NACADA. I want to be a cheerleader for everything NACADA does well and I want to help find places where maybe we can improve. I want our leaders to be excited about their NACADA work, not overworked about their NACADA work, and I want NACADA to be a place where new advisors are welcomed to bring their enthusiasm into the discussions.
I remember announcing at a Region 7 conference in Branson, Missouri years ago that I wanted someday to have Charlie Nutt’s job. I have now matured enough to realize...

Platform Statement: Part IV

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
I joined the Diversity committee in 2012. Truthfully, I felt underprepared and even under qualified to even attend my first meeting.  Although I had traveled the world, my personal world at that time was small and I was so unaware.  I am a stronger individual because of what I have learned from this committee and those that have taken the time to better educate me. For me maybe the strongest take away is to realize how little I can know or understand from anyone else’s experience. That doesn’t make one “better” or “worse” and doesn’t make anything “right” or “wrong”.  Each person has their own story to tell and each story is valid and important.
Within NACADA I think our goal and our struggle is to make that apply to every member. We come from different backgrounds, work in extremely different situations all over the world, and all have different things that matter most to us. Finding the way to blend those things into one cohesive organization and meeting all of...
