Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
If elected to this position, I would continue the work that the commission is doing to reach out to faculty advisors.  Faculty advisors sometimes feel excluded from the community of advising for many reasons.  Perhaps their advising contributions are undervalued at their institution, or they are unaware of advising theory and the scholarship of advising.  Maybe they feel that the NACADA community is only for professional advisors, not faculty.  The commission's activities seek to include faculty in the broader advising community through our listserv, blog, webinars, and support of faculty who are engaged in the scholarship of advising.

Platform Statement: Part II

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
Over the last three years I have been involved in leading many different advising initiatives at WSU.  I helped to develop and implement our current mission, vision, and goals for academic advising.  I was involved with adapting Blackboard technology for advisors' use.  Most recently, I have chaired the steering committee for a pilot program in "equitable advising," an advising model in which some students are not required to meet with their advisor before registration, based on their academic standing and progress.

As a leader, I believe that my main contribution to the success (so far) of these projects is my willingness to go to the heart of the problem and seek the most effective solution, rather than an easy one.  As a leader I try to bring both decision makers and stakeholders to the table and work towards consensus.  I seek feedback broadly and implement solutions that make sense without regard to ego or personal considerations.

Platform Statement: Part III

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
I am interested in serving in this position because I have been involved with the steering committee of the commission for the past year, and I believe that we have some great plans to provide resources for faculty advisors.  Serving in this position would allow me to continue to develop and implement the plans we have worked on over the last year.

Platform Statement: Part IV

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
NACADA embraces not only advisors from all backgrounds, it also provides resources and support for advisors in many different types of roles.  Faculty advisors sometimes feel excluded from the community of advisors or feel as if there is no advising community on their campus because of their role as faculty first, rather than as professional advisors.  I would work to promote the inclusion of faculty into the advising community by encouraging faculty to join the advising communities on their own campuses and to get involved with NACADA to find the larger advising community.

Past Involvement in NACADA

     b. National Offices Help and Accomplishments Achieved

a. I joined NACADA in 2015.
b. I was a 2016 NACADA Outstanding Faculty Advisor and I joined the Faculty Advising Steering Committee in 2016.
