Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
In alignment with the strategic goals of NACADA, here are a few goals I will bring to our committee:
•Empower members to engage in scholarship/research related to advising transfer students. I will work to build connections among members interested in research and seek out and encourage exemplary programs focused on advising transfer students to submit proposals for conferences and publishing within NACADA’s avenues.
•Professional development is essential to our continued growth. I recently co-led a zoom presentation for the Orientation Advising Potential Interest Group that was well received. We will organize at least 4 web-based programs per year. With these programs, we will engage in assessment to ensure participants are gaining the skills needed to more effectively navigate their work.
•We need overarching assessment of our advising community to understand our impact on individual’s knowledge and growth. This can help us shape what type of work we need to focus on.
•Technology...

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
One of my proudest professional accomplishments has been establishing our advising association on campus. Our Director for Campus Advising asked me to assemble a team of colleagues to establish an advising organization. I established the Advising Form Formalization Task Force of 8 members from across campus and we met over the next year to work through all of the details needed to create an organization. We reviewed current campus organizations and many similar advising-related organizations around the country. We organized meetings and created a survey for advisors to identify their wants and needs of the proposed association. Lastly, we created the official bylaws of the organization and elected our first officers, which I was grateful to be elected as the first chair. The organization, now in its 5th year, has had many successes. Most notably is our annual conference that I organized in its first year. Growing from 120 participants to 200, and 1 campus to 12, this conference has provided...

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
NACADA has been my professional development home since I joined in 2010. Then, a graduate student, I had a lot to learn regarding advising and being a professional in higher education. I’ve also come to learn that you can never stop learning. Having recently transitioned into supervising professional staff, I also have gained a greater appreciation for seeking out opportunity to provide professional development for my staff. As such, my overarching goal is to advance the mission of our advising community for transfer students.
Specifically, I completed my dissertation focusing on the transition experience for community college transfer students. I found in my work that in comparison to many other topics of research in higher education, transfer and transition is still relatively new with regard to scholarship and literature. Today, over 37% of students have transferred to other institutions (USA Today College, 2015). Transfer students are an important part of the higher education landscape,...

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
Inclusivity is important to me personally because I value a team approach to accomplishing all of our work. Being inclusive requires that one not only says that they value an inclusive environment, but actively takes steps to make the environment inclusive. One of NACADAs strategies goals reads that NACADA will “foster inclusive practices within the Association that respect the principle of equity and the diversity of advising professionals across the vast array of intersections of identity.”

There are a few mechanisms that I would like to focus on specifically within the Advising Community for Transfer Students. First, we need diverse representation in our advising community membership. This means ensuring that we have different types of institutions (2-year, 4-year, private, public, HBCU, HSIs, and international) represented. I will review our current roster and seek to reach out and encourage participation from members from a wide range of campus types. Specifically, with our...

     a. Years in NACADA

While I have not chaired any commissions or interest groups to date, I have been active with many of the conferences since joining NACADA. I have been a National Conference attendee 4 times (2012;2015;2016;2017)  and Region VI attendee 3 times (2010;2011;2014). At those conferences, I have presented/ co-presented 11 different times.
