1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
As a committee chair, I intend to promote all aspects of the strategic goals. Initially, it would be important to “develop and sustain effective Association leadership” and “provide professional development opportunities that are responsive to the needs of academic advising administrators.” A goal would be to educate members on the many leadership opportunities within NACADA, and how to pursue them. This can be done through our listserv, presentations offered, and formal and informal conversations among members. This advising group is ripe with leaders who have a passion for and are successful advising professionals, thus making this a great pool to develop our next NACADA leaders. Another goal would be to focus on providing opportunities that speak to advising administrators and those striving to be administrators. One idea is to increase and promote proposals that deal with: best practices, resources (preparing budgets, technology, etc.), and new and innovative ideas to promote...

Another idea is to continue and expand the hot topic presentations that are currently offered for advising administrators. As national conference attendee, I’ve always enjoyed these sessions and found them helpful and a place of validation. I would like to extend these professional development offerings to be more specific based on demographics as some issues present in some institutions and not others (ex. large vs small or public vs private).

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
This past September, I was awarded the Wassenich Award for Mentoring in the Texas Christian University Community. This is a university award presented at convocation that celebrates faculty and staff members who serve as role models, advisors, and guides to students. I mention this accomplishment because mentoring is one of the most important things I strive to do as a leader and to receive an award for mentoring is a physical acknowledgement of that passion. It humbles me to know that I received nominations from students, alumni and colleagues who described me as a professor who “creates an environment of trust” for students and who “invests time and commitment beyond what is required to help [students] grow and develop individually.”
The fact that people have acknowledged my abilities as a leader is one of the accomplishments that I am more proud of professionally. On a personal note, I have only benefited from having met and been guided by some fantastic mentors. One of the...

The fact that people have acknowledged my abilities as a leader is one of the accomplishments that I am more proud of professionally. On a personal note, I have only benefited from having met and been guided by some fantastic mentors. One of the reasons that I love NACADA is the professional colleagues that I have gotten to know internationally. As a result, I have made it my personal goal to give back and to provide guidance to others. I think mentoring isn’t just about passing on knowledge and skills but about helping people be the best version of themselves. If elected to this position, I would work to incorporate mentoring into the committee in both formal and informal ways.

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
My interest in this position is to have the opportunity to serve NACADA and members of the academic advising community. This position would also help serve advising administrators that have an essential role in institutions of higher education, through the balance of advising for student success and being responsible for the creation and implementation of policy and procedures that provide a larger impact. The exchange of knowledge and information can help strengthen the membership of NACADA as well as higher education as a whole. I’ve been a member and/or associated with NACADA for 15 years and I would like the chance to serve in this organization which has certainly educated me from my very first position as an advisor and now as an advising administrator. I can honestly say that my affiliation with NACADA has truly been a benefit and blessing. Previously, I served as the chair of the Health Professions Advising Interest Group. Through this work I was able to gain valuable knowledge from many other institutions that I was able to implement on my campus. I am currently a member-at-large with the awards committee. These opportunities of leadership have allowed me to learn and grow but have also motivated me to continue the work with NACADA. This new opportunity would allow me to learn and meet others who do the work that I find most rewarding, and it will also allow me to share my organizational and leadership talents.

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
I will promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout the organization by continuing the work that I have started within NACADA and more specifically with the advising groups (previously known as commission and interest groups, CIGD). I’ve had the opportunity to serve on a couple task forces within CIGD that were established to look at our efforts to be more inclusive. One is the diversity task force which has been reviewing ways to promote diversity and inclusiveness among the leadership within CIGD. The other task force is looking at the CIGD awards criteria to make sure we are using fair and best practices to award members.
I will also continue to promote and encourage any and all individuals who have an interest in getting involved with NACADA. Two very recent examples occurred at the national conference. I had the opportunity to sit on a panel that was designed to educate and encourage members to get involved in NACADA. My goal was to not only educate and encourage but to provide...

I had the opportunity to sit on a panel that was designed to educate and encourage members to get involved in NACADA. My goal was to not only educate and encourage but to provide my experiences as woman of color and the opportunities that have been presented to me through NACADA as I have sought out opportunities to serve and lead. The other example is I attended the town hall meeting that was offered as a way to give feedback to NACADA. I felt that as someone who is engaged in an organization it is my responsibility or opportunity to provide information to allow this organization to continue to improve and be successful.
