Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
One way I will attempt to meet the strategic goals of NACADA is by reaching out to institutions throughout our region that have not been involved in NACADA.  This will support NACADA Strategic Goals in a multiple ways. First it will help to “expand and communicate the scholarship of academic advising” by sharing our mission with more institutions region wide who are not familiar with NACADA.  This outreach can also encourage institutions who are geographically near each other to share best practices and professional development opportunities.  With professional development dollars getting smaller every year, offering smaller drive-in conferences can be a wonderful way to connect professionals and encourage effective academic advising.

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
As a leader it is important to meet people where they are.  I’ve served as Conference Co-Chair, Program Co-Chair, Registration Co-Chair and Vendor Co-Chair, working with many talented professionals in NACADA Region 1.  My leadership role with the Conference Planning Committee is one of support, encouragement and recognition.  This is not a group of individuals that needs micromanaging.  I am routinely amazed by the talent and dedication in Region 1.   However, sometimes colleagues need different things from a leader.  When I first started at Keene State, advisors were relying on paper checklists to track degree progress. These were often incorrect or not updated.  KSC had better technology in 2012 than the checklist but many in our office were resistant.  Periodically I would share a situation where a student I was working with had not made academic progress due to an incorrect checklist.  One student was using his mom’s checklist – she had graduated 10 years earlier!  Checklists...

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
I am interested in serving as Region 1 Chair because of the people I have had the honor of working with since becoming a member of NACADA.  NACADA has provided me with countless opportunities to make strong professional connections, since my first Region 1 Conference in Montreal, Canada.  It was from that first exposure to such a dedicated, tireless, fun-loving professional organization, I knew I wanted to be a part of this team.  I have gained so much from the generosity of my colleagues that I hope to give back, pay forward, and engender a feeling of connectedness region wide.

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
As Region Chair I will bring the unique perspective of having lived and worked in a variety of areas throughout the region.  I was born and raised in New York, earned my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in New York and held my first professional position in New York.  After New York I moved to Massachusetts and held multiple positions at different institutions in Massachusetts.  Currently I live in New Hampshire and have held multiple positions at different institutions in New Hampshire.  I believe my diverse experience of living and working with higher education professionals throughout Region 1 gives me a greater perspective and understanding of some issues and challenges each area faces.  I will strive to help advisors in Buffalo, NY feel as connected to NACADA Region 1 as advisors in Boston, MA.

Platform Statement: Part V

5. Outline your past involvement in NACADA:
     a. Years in NACADA
     b. National Offices Help and Accomplishments Achieved

I have been part of NACADA since 2012.  I started out as a general member, enjoyed meeting all the NACADA members and wanted to get more involved.  My first role was as vendor co-chair.  I had no idea what I was doing but everyone was so helpful and supportive, from EO to my colleagues in Region 1.  I asked a ton of questions and it worked out.  It was after this initial experience that I knew I would want to continue my involvement.  Since then, I've served as registration co-chair, conference co-chair and program co-chair.
