Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
Theoretical, historical, and philosophical perspectives on advising continue to offer a unique vantage point from which to understand our profession. As chair of TPH, I would continue to advance successful initiatives from our past leaders like the TPH virtual discussions, encouraging the full diversity of our membership to participate and offer new humanities-oriented perspectives on advising.  Humanities-oriented scholarship continues to lag behind empirical research in NACADA-run publication venues; if elected, I would work to find ways, in partnership with the other research-focused arms of NACADA, to support advisors who may have never engaged in philosophical or historical scholarship to do so and to pursue publication opportunities within and outside NACADA. Finally, as chair of TPH I would seek fruitful collaborations with other Advising Communities: a virtual discussion on queer theory in advising would benefit from partnership with the LGBTQA Advising and Advocacy Community; an...

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
During the 2016-2017 school year, I served as co-chair for Professional Development in KASADA, the Kent State University advising organization. That year, my co-chair and I organized viewings of webinars, discussions, and social events for advisors to spend time together for personal and professional wellness. That work was deeply collaborative between my co-chair and I and I am proud of the opportunities that we were able to give to advisors on my campus. This reflects my leadership style--working with others to achieve shared goals and advance the work we do as a profession. The Theory, Philosophy, and History of Advising Community (TPH) benefits from a variety of perspectives, experiences, forms of expertise, and voices. If elected, my work as chair will be about creating a shared vision for TPH and enabling the talented people who are a part of TPH to use those talents in ways that benefit the Community and the association.

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
At the Annual Conference in Las Vegas in 2015, Janet Schulenberg (who was at that time the outgoing chair of the Theory, Philosophy, and History of Advising Community (TPH)) came up to me after a session and encouraged me to attend the TPH meeting at the conference. I had an interest in the ways that theory and philosophy might inform advising but I don’t know that I would have joined TPH without her encouragement. That one moment of connection really helped me to find a home in NACADA and TPH in particular. Serving on the Steering Committee, I have seen the great work that TPH has been able to do, thanks to the dedication of our Community members. Serving as chair would allow me to continue that work and continue to create connections that allow advisors to recognize their own ability to contribute to conversations about theory, philosophy, and history. Giving back to the Community that has enabled me to become a more engaged, scholarly NACADA member would be a powerful opportunity....

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
Equity and justice are keystones of my views on advising. Inclusion is merely a first step and cannot be the end-goal of our efforts to diversify the profession, the leadership of NACADA, and our institutions. Part of the role of philosophical and historical perspectives is critique, offering a critical view of what was and is, and offering a new normative view of what advising could be. I believe that all advisors can contribute in meaningful ways to that normative vision and have unique perspectives to offer on how theory, philosophy, and history can (and should) inform advising. Part of my role as chair, if elected, would be to actively seek out these diverse perspectives and to prioritize the inclusion of these critical perspectives. Equipping advisors with the tools to critique the ways that our profession, our association, and the system of higher education falls short empowers advisors to imagine advising differently. As a White person, of particular importance to me is including...
