1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
The two areas I am most passionate about are professional development of advisors & inclusive practices within the association. I’ve been vocal about these goals because I want to ensure NACADA best meet the needs of & utilize the talents of all of our members. I remain an advocate & catalyst for this work. As President, I will continue to challenge myself and others in NACADA to look openly and critically at processes, perceptions, & structures that may impede our ability to provide opportunities that meet the needs of our more than 12,000 members or which have left anyone feeling that membership or leadership in NACADA wasn’t really meant for them.
Members have shared their experiences in conversations, town halls, & surveys. I’ve heard wonderful success stories, but I’ve also heard stories that break my heart & embolden my drive to to do what I can to help NACADA grow and progress. I’ve not met a leader who doesn’t share a desire to make every advisor feel welcome, but...

I’ve not met a leader who doesn’t share a desire to make every advisor feel welcome, but that desire hasn’t always translated into an improved reality. We must not downplay contributions of our current members/leaders, but as current President Archambault said, “We need more black folks, more latinx folks, more people from community colleges, HBCUs, & under-resourced institutions.“ We can’t be afraid to face our challenges head on. We have to continue to take deliberate, thoughtful action. We can create real change, but it’s going to take all of us.

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
When I look back on my work within NACADA, I am most proud of my accomplishments within the previously named Commission & Interest Group Division (CIGD). The CIGD was a key part of my path in NACADA – first as a commission volunteer and chair, then as a CIGD steering committee member, and finally as the elected CIGD Representative. This division is often seen as the most accessible path to increased NACADA engagement and it’s incredibly important to the work of NACADA and its members.
As CIGD Rep, I worked with other leaders to create a Chair Handbook, revamp annual training, and significantly improve on-boarding & support for division leaders. During my last year as Rep, I led a team of dedicated advising professionals and NACADA staff that created a successful proposal to restructure the entire division – moving from Commission and Interest Groups to one hierarchy free, unified group, Advising Communities. The proposal was approved unanimously. I quite literally cried tears of...

It was historical moment for the association and was an exemplar for the association’s responsiveness to and inclusion of its members’ voices. The successful merging of Commissions and Interest Groups into the ACD provides consistency, fosters sustainable leadership, and better addresses the needs of the association’s entire membership. I was incredibly proud when Advising Communities officially debuted at the 2018 Annual Conference.

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
NACADA has been an enormous gift for me professionally. Even as an advisor working with a very specific population (I was a disability services advisor), I was welcomed and given opportunities to give back to the field. Though my career has morphed over the years, the support and opportunities within NACADA have been my one constant. I have been exceptionally fortunate to present, write, and lead with NACADA, and want to use my background, experiences, and skills to continue to serve the Association and its members going forward. Over the last several years, I’ve learned that not every member experiences such an “easy” journey within the association. Some are overwhelmed at its size. Some cannot afford to engage in the ways they would like. Some haven’t seen themselves in the membership/leadership and questioned whether they belonged.

My work on the Board and Council have provided key insights into the workings of the association and the needs and demographics of NACADA’s members. The NACADA President serves as a key advocate for members and has key influence over the work of the board and council. I watched a talk recently about the need to lean in to the uncomfortable. If elected, I hope to facilitate continued celebration of our successes, but also push us to lean into tough conversations about the challenges we face as an Association going into the future. I believe my dedication, strengths, and skills will be great assets in the role of President.

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
I’ve always been captivated by the amazing potential in human beings – the tenacity of spirt in each of our individual stories and the undeniable bonds that connect us. Throughout my life, I’ve been attuned to notice who most often experiences injustice and who more often is provided opportunities, and my NACADA path has been closely aligned to initiatives focused on diversity and inclusivity. Whether chairing the Advising Students with Disabilities Commission, serving on the Diversity Committee, as a mentor & Advisory Board member of the Emerging Leaders Program, and now as VP, I have committed myself to redressing the balance of opportunities.
I am inspired by the work being done within NACADA, but each is just a small ripple of the efforts needed to ensure inclusivity. During the last two annual conferences, I had the opportunity to hear directly from members about the challenges that still exist. Our efforts have not gone unnoticed, but we haven’t yet done enough. Members have challenged us to do better, to do more. Diversity and inclusion need to be at the forefront of every conversation and initiative within the association. To improve diversity and inclusion, we must to recruit and support members from under-resourced schools and historically underrepresented groups, make pathways to leadership clearer, and aggressively remove barriers that exist.
