Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
If elected as Vice President, I have the opportunity to serve the association working directly with the NACADA Council leadership in their work that actualizes the strategic goals of the association across the world, within and across institutions, and for individual advisors and administrators, in the following ways:

* expanding professional development opportunities for advisors and advising administrators across the globe that are cost-effective, needs-based, and available in a variety of formats. Our global growth must continue to reach advisors and institutions who can both utilize NACADA's resources AND contribute to the growth and development of the field of academic advising.

* continued examination of our practices and barriers and how we embrace the growing diversity of voices and experiences of our advising community, including them in the many conversations, resources, services and events around academic advising, including the students and communities we serve and the...

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
I am most proud of my partnership with Sandra Waters to facilitate five years of annual conference panel presentations entitled "Women Thriving: Not Just Surviving a Career in Academic Advising/Higher Education" (2010-2014). The idea was born out of a conversation we had shortly after meeting in 2009 about juggling our roles as advising administrators with our family responsibilities. The panelists were women in administrator roles at their respective institutions who have also served NACADA in various leadership roles (including several past presidents and members of the Board of Directors) who shared their stories about "climbing the ladder" in their careers and in leadership roles, completing doctoral degrees, changing institutions, balancing personal and professional responsibilities, embracing self-care, being mentored and serving as mentors. This year at the annual conference in Phoenix, we reintroduced Women Thriving with panelists who identify as women of color, to share their experiences...

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
As a new current Board member, I am involved in discussions and decisions that further the mission of the association and the steps to actualizing our goals. I also have firsthand knowledge and experience as a recent Council member that will help with the continuity of the momentum in all three NACADA divisions, including the regional review, leadership academy, inclusion and diversity study, and the ongoing efforts to meet NACADA's strategic goals.

Being involved in multiple aspects of the association, including the Town Hall sessions, has allowed me to see NACADA through multiple lenses and through recent changes. The conversations and initiatives have connected me to colleagues across the country and throughout the world, and several of those colleagues have put put their time and energy into helping me make connections, giving feedback and lending an ear, providing resources and opportunities when appropriate. Some of these colleagues nudged me into consider running for Vice President;...

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
Last year, a NACADA colleague shared Verna Myer's quote, "Diversity is being invited to the party; inclusion is being asked to dance", which has stuck with me ever since. I believe that we need to continually to ask ourselves and each other who have we invited and accepted into NACADA and who we have not yet embraced into our community, intentionally or unintentionally. More importantly, we must constantly ask if we are empowering those individuals and groups to be active contributors and leaders in our initiatives, projects, events, resources, scholarship, leadership, etc. and find ways to do so. I will continue to work to engage individuals and institutions who are not represented well or at all in our membership and leadership demographics, including those who have never been NACADA members and those who have lapsed in their membership -- and therefore may be unrepresented or underrepresented in our events, resources, scholarship, and leadership. These individual and collective contributions...
