Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
If elected to the Board of Directors, I will focus on helping NACADA meet the following strategic goals:
1) Develop & sustain effective Association leadership.  I believe opportunities to recruit new NACADA members and leaders exist in all 3 divisions; we just need to help people find them.  Encouraging someone to join an advising community, volunteer for the first time at a state drive-in or region conference, or sit in on a committee meeting can ignite a spark that will drive them to explore other ways in which they can lead and grow within NACADA.  I would like to work closely with Division Representatives and help them to think about ways in which they can increase mentoring and the nurturing of leadership in their divisions. I would also love to assist with the implementation of the upcoming Leadership Academy training.
2) Engage in ongoing assessment of all facets of the Association.  This position would offer the opportunity to help Division Representatives establish their yearly...

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
The accomplishment within NACADA of which I am proudest is successfully co-chairing the 2012 Region 2 conference in Annapolis, MD.  We had over 400 attendees, which was record-breaking for the region at that time.  To achieve this goal, my co-chair and I selected and managed an 11-person steering committee over the course of two years and oversaw every detail of the conference.
Two things made this accomplishment memorable.  First, while my co-chair and I had split our duties evenly, she became ill one month before the conference and had to temporarily step down to take care of her health.  Therefore, in the crunch time leading up to the conference, I became the primary chair and had to quickly and efficiently tackle the new tasks that came with this responsibility.  Second, we had an obstacle to overcome regarding the hotel space.  At the time the hotel was booked, Region 2 had an average conference attendance of 350, and the hotel would have been a tight fit for that.  With the unexpectedly...

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
I have been very active in NACADA leadership since 2006, when I was asked to be concurrent sessions chair for the 2007 annual conference in Baltimore, Maryland.  Since then, I have served as the Maryland State Liaison from 2008-2010, co-chair for the Region 2 Conference in Annapolis in 2012, Global Awards chair from 2013-2015, and Region 2 Chair from 2016-2018.
Through my experiences working in the Administrative and Region Divisions, I have become increasingly interested in serving the association and its membership on the Board level.  I have experienced plentiful opportunities to learn and grow my leadership skills in both the Administrative and Region Divisions.  It has meant so much to be mentored and supported by past Presidents Joanne Damminger and Tom Grites over the years, and I know that positive experiences like this are happening in all of NACADA’s divisions.  I would love nothing more than to serve on the Board to help advance the needs of the association.  It would also...

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
To promote inclusivity within NACADA, I would like to talk to the Division Representatives about any problems they perceive regarding membership within their divisions.  Are there institutions with no NACADA participation they would like to see included? (For example, Hispanic Serving Institutions, Tribal Colleges, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, community colleges, and rural colleges.)  What can we do to reach out to institutions with less NACADA participation and help them feel more involved?  One example I can give is that, in Region 2, we have been piloting a “drive-out” model, in which our state/district/commonwealth liaisons target institutions which are either remotely located or currently not participating in NACADA and offer to drive to them for a professional development event. This model could easily be expanded with the goal of being more comprehensively inclusive.
