1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
It is an exciting time for the advising profession and NACADA. The tremendous growth in membership, professional development opportunities, and support for advisors and administrators are due to our member-driven initiatives, the work of our leaders, and the efforts of the Executive Office. There are two NACADA Strategic Goals that I believe are the areas with the most potential for growth as the Board of Directors continues discussions of the association’s future.
With the support of the Research Committee and NACADA Center for Research, the following years will see rapid growth of the scholarship of academic advising. The Board should envision how NACADA can continue supporting collaborative efforts and welcoming all forms of scholarship and creative research approaches, so that our members can identify methods that are appropriate to their contexts and interests and confidently engage in scholarly practice and research productivity.

NACADA has done amazing work to be inclusive of all our members. Now, our leadership has heard the need that we must be intentional in engaging specific populations in our association, particularly our members of color, and ensuring accessibility to all professional development opportunities. The Board will need to discuss a vision for what the experiences look like for members of color who want to contribute to the advancement of the association and members with access needs, reflecting our inclusive organization in the future.

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
My proudest accomplishment in NACADA has been my contributions to the restructure process the Commission and Interest Group Division recently went through into the Advising Communities Division. When I was elected as a Division Representative on the NACADA Council for the 2017-2019 term, I jumped into this massive undertaking with my fellow Reps Erin Justyna, Rebecca Cofer, and Rebecca Hapes and was involved with the process from writing the initial proposal through implementation of necessary structures, policies, and procedures. We went through every step seeking input from our Chairs, steering committee, and affected committees/advisory boards. None of this would have been possible without the unanimous support of our Chairs, the Council, and the Board of Directors.
I believe the unanimous support was partly due to our ability to collaborate with various stakeholders to ensure everyone’s needs were adequately met in this major decision. Collaboration only makes the outcomes better...

I believe the unanimous support was partly due to our ability to collaborate with various stakeholders to ensure everyone’s needs were adequately met in this major decision. Collaboration only makes the outcomes better for all affected by involving multiple perspectives that may not originally be considered and dividing up the work so everyone has an opportunity to contribute. However, truly collaborative dialogue requires trust in the leadership, and I believe I bring the necessary communication and relational skills needed to foster that trust as a leader. This experience also shows how passionate I am about the growth of our association and that I will commit the time needed for any role or task.

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
I have been engaged in nearly every facet of our organization, including serving on administrative committees, advisory boards, the Advising Communities Division, my Region’s steering committee, conference planning, presenting, publishing, and mentoring. These experiences have allowed me the opportunity to immerse myself in the association and its structures to advocate for members’ immediate needs. I am now running for the Board of Directors because I believe I can positively contribute to the conversations that shape our association’s future. Within the 2019-2022 term, the Board will need to review the benchmarks that have been established for the NACADA Strategic Goals. I am excited about the prospect of being a part of this discussion by first acknowledging the accomplishments that got the association where it is today in excellent financial health and with over 14,000 members, and then proactively addressing our members’ evolving needs and exploring innovative means to advance...

NACADA has provided me a wealth of knowledge and an amazing network of friends and colleagues that have made me the advisor and leader I am today. While I could never give back enough to the membership and organization to match what I have gained, every contribution matters. I would be humbled and honored to serve on the Board of Directors in a way I can utilize my energy, enthusiasm, and skills to lead us into a very exciting future for academic advising.

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
One barrier for inclusivity within the association is that the leadership does not reflect the diversity of the membership, and I have been involved in several initiatives to overcome this obstacle. I am a graduate of the Emerging Leaders Program, was a member on the ELP Advisory Board, and currently serve as a Mentor. I am a member of the Sustainable NACADA Leadership Committee, which is developing curriculum on leadership pathways and how to succeed in roles once elected/appointed. I have co-developed a panel session where NACADA leaders share their perspectives on getting involved, how they navigated their way into their roles, and insights on the election/appointment process. If elected to the Board of Directors, I would advise that we continue these initiatives and explore other means to articulate the pathways to leadership and the wide array of involvement opportunities our members can pursue.

I have been a NACADA member since 2012 and jumped into my first leadership roles in 2013, which puts me in the position of being able to represent the professional development needs of newer advisors at the highest leadership levels of NACADA. I strive to be an example to newer professionals, showing that it is not always how many years of experience you have, but rather how passionate you are about becoming a leader in NACADA and doing the work. I enjoy helping new advisors get connected with current leaders and feel confident in stepping into leadership roles.
