Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
Region V has been a strong Region for NACADA in membership, regional conference attendance, and in budget. As a past Ohio Academic Advising Association (OHAAA) President I am aware of the importance of assessment, meeting our membership needs, and effectively communicating upcoming opportunities. If elected as the Great Lakes Region V Chair I will work tirelessly with the steering committee, go the extra mile, and work smart. I strive to excel in any endeavor that comes before me and continuing to retool to meet challenges.

By partnering with our membership it will allow for continued open communication of needs both from our members as well as within Region V. Here we will be able to make minor adjustments or have discussions for more intricate movements in direction. This will allow us to stay current and relevant with the NACADA strategic goals that are pressing to our membership during the upcoming academic years.

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
In an effort to improve retention rates it is important to have accurate tracking information to provide personal, targeted registration messages. I worked with our Institutional Research Office to provide a report that could be ran, on demand, by various personnel across campus. This report provides Advisors with important information such as holds, if students have applied for graduation, their GPA, and contact information. This report not only was a benefit for my department but because it is housed with our reports, anyone with access can run it to increase retention across levels (undergraduate and graduate) and across colleges.

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
Once my term as Past-President with the Ohio Academic Advising Association (OHAAA) ended I wanted to transition to NACADA leadership in an effort to continue to promote the profession of Advising, connect Advisors with professional development opportunities, and ensure that Advising is relevant and current in today’s world. At the time of my transition out of leadership with OHAAA, I was also taking on a new role at a new institution so the timing was not right for me then. I was honored to receive the nomination as the Great Lakes Region V Chair this time! I have been in my role since 2015, and I am ready for the added responsibility that comes with volunteering for leadership positions.

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
While serving on the board of OHAAA, having a diverse representation of our membership was also important to us. We worked to keep membership affordable for all professionals, free professional development opportunities for members, and by requesting our members to host the annual conferences we were also able to pass the savings along to our membership. This enabled us to continue to travel across the State of Ohio, to be inclusive to our members, at a cost that was affordable.

I would work with the steering committee to start with an assessment of our current Region V membership to determine where we may be under represented, seek volunteers for a sub-committee to find out what are some of the reasons we are missing this audience, target personalized communication to specific areas that are under-represented, and work to enhance participation at all levels (awards, membership, conference attendance, etc.).
