Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
Although I have only been on the Board for a few months, I have learned a great deal so far. I understand that it is the responsibility of the Board to be informed, involved, and make good decisions in terms of the strategic goals of the organization.

I am most invested in two of the strategic goals because I believe I can make the most impact in these areas:

"Provide professional development opportunities that are responsive to the needs of advisors and advising administrators." Professional development is a win-win-win situation all the way around: advisors and advising administrators benefit from it, our students benefit from it, and advising as a profession is elevated and enriched.

"Foster inclusive practices within the Association that respect the principle of equity and the diversity of advising professionals across the vast array of intersections of identity." I believe that diversity, equity, and inclusivity are vital goals that run though all our work and we need to...

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
My biggest accomplishment to date has been being elected to the NACADA Board. Many of the people who ran for the board are colleagues that I know well and admire greatly. It was a great honor just to be nominated alongside them and a huge honor to be selected to serve our membership. I believe that this demonstrates that others read and understood my platform last year and it resonated with them enough that they voted for me. Living in Hawaii, I have the privilege of working at one of the most diverse institutions in the country. Although we have our share of issues, I believe that we have a unique, proactive perspective to share with others. I plan to use my time on the board to engage as many people as I can and get them involved as well. I know that I would not be able to be on the Board, if it were not for the support, encouragement, of so many people. In my advising office, in the committees I serve on and  in work with NACADA, I attempt to work collaboratively and support, encourage...

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
Running for the Board of Directors was one of the scariest things I have ever done in my life. However, personal experiences over the past year have repeatedly reminded me, over and over, how precious our time is and thus, how important it is to make the most of each day. As a result, I have reflected on what is truly important to me. I aim to aid NACADA's efforts in the areas of diversity and inclusion either directly or even indirectly. I plan to make the most of my time on the Board and want to make a difference and give back to NACADA because I feel that it has so much to offer its members.

I am interested in serving in this position specifically because I feel that it is the best way for me to learn more about how to best support this goal and I understand that the Vice President serves as the liaison to the Advising Community division, the division that I have had the honor of serving for many years. I also feel that the position allows vice presidents to learn a great deal, to...

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
I think it is crucial to actively promote engagement and involvement by reaching out to others, listening to them, and engaging them. At the last conference in Phoenix, I spent as much time as I could talking to people to find out more about their perspectives on these issues. I put together a panel of leaders on how to best serve as an ally to students and advisors of color because I wanted participants to hear different, powerful and compelling perspectives on this issue. I served as a notetaker for the Town Hall in order to be able to hear participants' comments. I realize that we may have difficult, but necessary, conversations ahead of us. We need to enrich NACADA for everyone by using everyone's voices and ideas.

There are actions that we can take on an organizational level in terms of letting both incoming members and continuing members know that their ideas and perspectives are valued. There are also actions that we can take on an individual level to reach out, guide, and connect...
