1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
The Advising Communities Division is the largest of NACADA's three divisions, and is the one that most directly impacts ALL members, through the AC memberships selected by each member. We have a great opportunity to get members involved through our advising communities, and it is a fantastic way to have an impact and make individual voices heard. I want to make sure that members know we are here to support them, not just through conferences but year-round with the events and work the division does through Advising Communities.
I would like to continue to work on the ACD restructure process and help find ways that ACD can make NACADA more than a once-a-year conference experience, and one that is positive in all aspects four ALL our members. This Division is also the most agile and well-positioned to respond quickly to goals 1 and 2, scholarship and professional development opportunities, as we can really talk to our Community members to see what is needed/wanted and work to meet those...

Sustainable Leadership, is also key- ACD is a prime opportunity for those who are interested to start down that path. It just takes one email or raised hand to say, "I can do that!" As a previous chair and now cluster rep, I'd like to work to facilitate those opportunities to potential incoming chairs, steering committee members, and future leaders.

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
I was hired in my current advising office to be one of three advisors; within two months, both other advisors had left for other opportunities. Our Academic Dean left at the end of the semester, and my direct supervisor left less than a year later. I found myself in the position of being the only advisor for my campus; then, supervisor for my team. (We do have more advisors now!) It was an unexpected opportunity to take on new tasks, roles, leadership opportunities, and to rework our advising process to better serve our students. I have worked very hard with my team to be more available and responsive to the needs of our students, and I believe this experience will serve me well in this position.
I am always open to feedback and continuous improvement, and know that I have much to learn from others that I can then teach to spread the knowledge. I also believe that I am a strong advocate for the importance of advising, not only to my campus administration but also to others outside...

I want to parley that to being responsive and open to improvement in our Division as well. I feel that I can serve as an advocate for ACD to the EO and NACADA leadership as well, through representation of our chairs, and through them, our membership.

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
I have been a member of the CIGD/ACD since joining NACADA in 2009. I feel like it's the Division with the most impact on individual members, and has certainly had the most impact on me. It is an opportunity to continue being involved, and to continue to see through the restructure we worked so hard on.
I have served as a commission chair, and two terms as a Steering Committee member/Cluster Representative for the Division. I've been lucky to have had several NACADA mentors who have taken time to help me in each step of my NACADA journey, and this is a way to repay them, and also pay it forward and serve as a mentor to others who would like to get more involved as well. I well remember how nervous I was as a new incoming chair (way back in 2013!) and how much the outgoing chair and other Division leadership supported and encouraged me in that role.
I think this is also a fantastic opportunity to promote the ACD through service on the NACADA Council as well- I will have the opportunity...

I think this is also a fantastic opportunity to promote the ACD through service on the NACADA Council as well- I will have the opportunity to work on larger, association-wide initiatives that will impact all divisions and all members. I realize what a privilege it is to even be able to run for this position, because I a fully aware that there are many others who would like to be more involved but finances, job duties, etc preclude it.

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
I have, I feel, a unique perspective on the Global part of the "Global Community for Academic Advising." I'm an American expat serving in a US institution in the Middle East state of Qatar, which brings a whole other pile of opportunities and challenges. It has really opened my eyes to what diversity & inclusivity can mean and be. It's not just race/color/gender, though those are critical and often the first things we see/judge- it is also about being open to hearing others experiences, realizing those are different from yours, and while you cannot have the SAME experience, you can appreciate, empathize, learn from, and advocate for others. I want to do that for those who may not feel comfortable speaking up in a group, for those who feel outside of the mainstream; in the ACD, we have a unique opportunity to be able to reach each member and really connect. NACADA is a large organization and can be overwhelming at times- but if each of us takes just a few minutes to reach out, it really...

Speaking from my perspective: I don't have a grad degree in student affairs, or anything else, & at my first conference I was super intimidated by everyone who did. I want to show others who may feel the same that it IS possible to be involved and contribute to the organization, even without the advanced degree(s); also, that we miss out on valuable experiences and knowledge when we discount others' paths and experiences.
