Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
If elected as the Probation/Dismal/Reinstatement (PDR) chair, I will attempt to promote NACADA’s strategic goal of expanding and communicating the scholarship of academic advising. I will strive to meet this goal by working to encourage evidence-based practices for those working with PDR students. If elected, I will work with the PDR Steering Committee to update the PDR resource list so that it includes more resources that teach best practices for working with reinstated students.   Also, if elected I will continue to engage the PDR community by utilizing the PDR listserv and social media for sharing how to serve PDR students best. Lastly, I will attempt to encourage the PDR members to collaborate on AAT articles, presentations at regional, annual and international conferences, and research projects that advance the understanding of the unique needs of PDR students.

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
The NACADA accomplishment that I am proudest of is my selection to the 2016-2018 class of the Emerging Leader's Program.  I am proud of this accomplishment because I was the first ever NACADA Emerging Leader chosen from my institution.  I am genuinely grateful for this achievement because it has not only allowed me to get more involved within NACADA, but it also encouraged dozens of academic advisors on my campus to get more involved within NACADA as well.
In 2018, I was selected as the recipient of the Wayne State University Outstanding Contributor award. The Outstanding Contributor award recognizes the significant accomplishment beyond normal responsibilities, scholarship and emerging leadership among junior staff.  This recognition helped to see that I am indeed making an impact within academic advising on campus.
All in all, my accomplishments within NACADA and my university demonstrate my commitment and passion for the advising profession and my willingness to serve as a NACADA...

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
I am interested in serving as the PDR Chair because I support the goal of the PDR community to share information and insights regarding students who are met with academic difficulties.  I became interested in PDR students at my institution five years ago when I developed an academic probation program designed to support Social Work students who were on probation. In 2016, I joined the PDR committee to better understand the needs and challenges of students on academic probation. In 2017, I volunteered to be part of the PDR Steering Committee. During my time on the steering committee, I helped to create the resource list of best practices for advising unique populations and the list of mental health resources for students. As I became more involved with the PDR community, I was able to respond to PDR inquiries that came through the listserve and even facilitated the PDR meeting at the 2018 annual conference in Phoenix, AR.  I am also co-author of a PDR sponsored article for Academic Advising...

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
A significant feature in promoting inclusivity within an association is the access to vital opportunities for networking for those members who might otherwise feel excluded. The Emerging Leaders Program does an excellent job at getting members from diverse backgrounds engaged, but with only accepting ten mentees each year, other opportunities must be established to continue to create a more diverse and inclusive association. For example, I will work with NACADA to promote inclusivity by encouraging the sponsorship of informal networking events where members could learn more about NACADA and feel more engaged and valued by the leaders of the association. I would also promote more informal mentoring and knowledge sharing of the pipeline to NACADA leadership opportunities for those members who feel excluded from the association but desire to get more involved.  I would also work with NACADA on developing a research team that will conduct a gap analysis to identify ways in which the association...
