Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
If elected to this role, my first step would be to listen to the NACADA members in Region V and address the ideas and concerns shared by them to the best of my ability in the role of Region V Chair in cooperation with the Region V Steering Team and NACADA Leadership.

In addition, I would plan to use my strong organization and communication skills to coordinate region business in an organized way, to clearly communicate to Region V members about the association and Region’s initiatives.

I would also like to identify and remove any barriers to members maximizing the value of their membership and seeking leadership roles within the association.  In part II of my platform statement, I outline a specific example from my time as the Wisconsin Liaison to NACADA to further demonstrate my leadership style.

Platform Statement: Part II

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
In my previous role as the Wisconsin Liaison to NACADA, in my conversation with Wisconsin members that I represented in the Region V Steering Team, I heard a clear theme of lack of financial support from campuses to be able to attend NACADA conferences or events.  Lack of the ability to be at the conferences and events also leads to barriers to taking on many of the leadership roles within the association.  At the same time, the Region V Steering Team was struggling with low numbers of applications for the existing professional development grants offered at that time.  I suggested in the challenging financial times for higher education that perhaps we wanted to allocate more of this grant funding to allow members to apply to attend NACADA events and conferences to address the member feedback I was hearing.  We re-wrote some of the grant application requirements to allow applications for conference attendance to remove some of the financial barriers to attending NACADA conferences and events...

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
It was suggested to me that I consider running for the Region V Chair role by a former Region V Chair that I had the pleasure of working with during my time on the Region V Steering Team as the Wisconsin Liaison to NACADA.  With her nudge, I began to consider the role and what I could bring to the Region in this leadership opportunity and was excited about the possibilities.  I joined NACADA in 2014 and have been an active member since this time.  At times, I have found aspects of the organization confusing to understand and navigate, which motivates me to learn more and then communicate what I have learned to other members who might be having a similar experience.  NACADA is an exciting community and resource to the academic advising field and I hope to continue finding ways to serve my colleagues through association leadership.

Platform Statement: Part IV

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
I think an important question to ask ourselves is who is not represented at the table (metaphorical or physical.)  As I mentioned earlier in my platform statements, in my role as Wisconsin Liaison, I was hearing a theme of funding scarcity causing professionals to be unable to attend NACADA events and also unable to commit to many association leadership roles.  I worked with the Region V Steering Team to look at how we could address these concerns and expanded professional development grants available through the region to begin to address this theme.  I see increasing access to NACADA events and leadership roles as directly connected to association inclusivity.

I will strive to be accessible to members to share their feedback, questions, and concerns.  I would listen to member feedback for themes that might be acting as barriers to inclusivity throughout or within the association.  I also plan to facilitate open dialog among the Region V Steering Team to allow other barriers to inclusivity...
