Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
My highest priority is to build and maintain lines of communication with the group to ensure their voices are heard.  From that point it would be to work on the hot topic issues that the graduate student advisers and the students themselves are experiencing.  I understand that there could be a wide variety of issues and concerns but it is vital to determine what they are and then focus on them accordingly. This particular advising category works with graduate students who are diverse in age, experience and education.  Topics that affect graduate students more than likely will not be effecting the undergraduate population.  What would the group want to actually be interested in the group as well as bringing in more/new members?  More drive ins?  A mentoring program? More (or any) discussions on social media?   It would be an honor to hear the advisers discuss their concerns and then as a group, to determine best practices.  Again, the bottom line for this accomplishment to come to fruition...

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
I am proud and honored to be a NACADA mentor.  This accomplishment means the world to me as I listen to other advisers and their concerns and we work together to come up with possible solutions. I am fortunate that an adviser can talk about what is really on his/her mind and without judgement, determine why they are in the place they are in, and what place do they want to go.  Being a mentor steps with them and shows the adviser the potential of what is out there and hopefully, to reach their goals in the process. I do not consider this being a leader in the traditional sense.  I consider this a guide to get to where (s)he wants to go.

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
I know I can do and be more with NACADA and that is what influenced to run.  I have visited the handful of sessions that deal with graduate students every annual conference and realize, I can do more.  After every annual conference I attend, I say that I will become more involved in NACADA and rarely do.  This year is different.  Now is the time to become more involved between the conferences instead of at them.  I feel that I have the personality that can guide this amazing group of advisers.

Platform Statement: Part IV

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
Everyone has a story and we all want to tell a chapter of it to someone.  Someone who will listen, without judgement, and to hear the author's unique voice.  The advisers are all in this together with our unique voices listening to students with their unique voices.  How do we promote enhancement of inclusivity?  We listen without judgement.  We have honest conversations.  We collaborate with others of ideas that will not change the world at once, but may change the idea from what cannot be to what might be.  I am a Gemini and with that comes the understanding of two sides.  It is my personality to see two sides and with that is my ability to listen without judgement and have conversations without prejudice.
