Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
If elected to be chair of Region 9, I will strive to accomplish a number of goals.  First, I will bring the concerns of Region 9 to the national level, and facilitate sharing the vision and mission of NACADA to Region 9.  Second, I would like to promote and continue the transformation of the practice of academic advising into a more holistic and developmental research-based approach when appropriate.  Third, I will strive to help to find ways for campuses promote the role and significance of academic advising to campus leadership, so that advising and advisors can obtain the support and recognition we need and deserve.  Fourth, I would like to find out what other issues people feel need to be addressed for Region 9 and help facilitate solutions to resolve them.

Platform Statement: Part II

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
I am proud of starting a movement to change the culture of advising at UCLA to be more holistic and developmental, and based on best practices, and have made great strides despite the wide variety of advising units and departments involved, few of whom report directly or even indirectly to me.  This has involved the creation of an advising professional development program as well as obtaining the buy-in from advisors across campus, and I feel has increased engagement and pride in what we do.  I am also proud of smaller accomplishments, such as making processes easier for students and/or staff, and making policies consistent, sensible, inclusive, and/or supportive of students.  Finally, I am proud of standing up for academic advising at UCLA and working to change perceptions of advising and its importance across the campus.  I am currently in the process of arranging for our Chancellor to speak to our academic advisors this coming February.

Platform Statement: Part III

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
While I feel that I have accomplished some significant things at UCLA, and have more things that I would like to do, I am also interested in expanding my activities beyond UCLA and the University of California.  NACADA has been an incredible opportunity for me to really understand what we do and why it is important, and I have tried to share as much of these ideas and best practices as I could with my UCLA colleagues, but I also feel that it is time to grow and give back to our global community as best as I can.  I am passionate about academic advising as an integral part of the university’s mission, and I believe that I can make a positive contribution to NACADA and to other advisors that will ultimately benefit our students.

Platform Statement: Part IV

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
I will continue to operate in a collaborative way as I have always done and to seek input and contributions actively from as many Region 9 members as I can from as diverse backgrounds as possible.  We do not live or work in a vacuum, and diverse backgrounds contribute to significantly better results and thinking.  I will actively reach out to as many people as possible beyond my own comfort zone to hear what is going on, what people’s concerns may be, and how we can incorporate best practices in our endeavor for student success, and I look forward to seeing how much this will impact my own personal and professional growth and development!

Platform Statement: Part V

5. Outline your past involvement in NACADA:
     a. Years in NACADA
     b. National Offices Help and Accomplishments Achieved

I have been a member of NACADA for over 4 years (since 2014), and attended my first national conference in Minnesota.  I was completely amazed by all of the incredible ideas I heard about, and this motivated me to create a professional development program at UCLA, for starters.  Since then I have brought back many ideas and practices for us to consider and try to implement (and I still have a list of ideas to get to).  I have attended every national conference since then, as well as an Administrative Institute and the Assessment Institute.  I have also participated as a faculty member for the Advising Research Seminar in the 2018 Spring Advising Seminar.
