Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
Within the Advising Community Division(ACD) there is an opportunity to provide depth in the leadership of the communities. While there are elected chairs, the timing is right to move for more structured leadership within each community. During my ACD involvement, I worked with communities with strong steering committees and those that were not nearly as developed. While the elected position has been the focus of leadership in the organization, good Advising Communities, are more than one person and it is time to put more development opportunities within each community.

The development and sustainability of effective Association leadership is one of the strategic goals that I believe I could have the most impact with if elected to this role. The ACD has over 40 communities which leaves a wonderful opportunity grow leaders (not just elected) and enhance the membership to the Association.

The Advising Communities Division, beyond electronic communication and outreach, primarily revolves...

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
Through my involvement within NACADA, I am incredibly proud of so many accomplishments. I have been fortunate to serve as the Advising Administration Community Chair, serve as a chair for a regional conference, be part of a team that started KACADA, and of course serving as chair for the 2017 Annual Conference in St. Louis, Missouri. I am a proud member and leader within NACADA.

Since arriving at SIUE in 2012, I am proud of an increase in our first-year retention rate by nearly 7%, changing the culture of a campus that focuses on the retention and graduation of each student, and the continual work that I do to create campus-wide collaboration and support of SIUE students. I have no doubt that the successes I have been able to experience with the team at SIUE are a highlight of my career.

The thing I am most proud of, however, is the impact of my leadership, supervision, and support of the staff I have worked with in my higher education career. For me, I know that any of the previously...

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
For the past two years I have thoroughly enjoyed my role on the ACD Steering Committee. The part I enjoyed the most was the work with the chairs of the cluster community I worked with each year. To be able to support and guide their ingenuity, drive, and passion toward their communities was incredibly motivating. That interaction, work, and relationship building is a major reason why I would like to serve in this leadership position within NACADA.

Like many, when I was new to NACADA, I clicked on the boxes provided on the membership form and thought I was just indicating areas of interest. For many years within NACADA, I am not sure that I had any idea what the Advising Community Division really could provide to me as a member. After serving as a chair for two years (Advising Administration) and serving on the ACD Steering Committee, I now look back as that time as a missed opportunity for my growth.

The ACD is my NACADA home. I can honestly say the ACD is a strong reason I attend...

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
Often when people mention their growth and development in NACADA, the stories are filled with individuals who have reached out to push their growth or inclusion within the organization. While I think that method can work, we need to continue to strive for an organization that enhances leadership opportunities throughout NACADA and that promotes leadership, scholarship, and academic efforts that are inclusive.

While I have mentioned growth of the various communities that are currently in existence, I also believe it is time to grow communities to be more representative of our membership. Is it time for NACADA to have Advising Communities that support and serve our African American, Latinx/a/o, Asian Pacific Islanders, and Multiracial membership and the students’ served on their home campuses? Yes. Absolutely! For NACADA to partner with members and have communities that increase members’ appreciation and knowledge for issues unique to the above-mentioned communities only can strengthen...

5. Outline your past involvement in NACADA:
     a. Years in NACADA
     b. National Offices Help and Accomplishments Achieved

I have been a proud and active member of NACADA since July, 2007. I attended my first Annual Conference in Baltimore with a charge from my supervisor of learning, leading, and committing. With that charge, I went to my first Region 3 meeting ready to get involved. When the Region 3 meeting broke out into states, Janet Spence mentioned needing a Kentucky Liaison to Region 3 and I raised my hand as interested(2007 – 2010). Within a few moments, she mentioned needing someone to agree to host the Region 3 Conference in Kentucky in 2010(co-chaired with Jessica Staten) and again, I raised my hand. Perhaps I was jumping in too quickly but that was the true beginning of my NACADA journey.

I was fortunate to serve as the co-chair of the 2012 Evaluations Committee in Nashville, TN(co-chair with Jessica Staten) and chair the 2017 Annual Conference in St. Louis, MO. This involvement allowed me to serve on the Annual Conference Advisory Board(2016 – 2018) and provide guidance for future Annual...
