Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
If elected to serve as chair of the inclusion and engagement committee, I will lead the committee through the next phase of implementation of strategic goal #4: Foster inclusive practices within the Association that respect the principle of equity and diversity of advising professionals across the vast array of intersections of identity. To me, this means that the committee takes on a leadership role within the association when reviewing results of the climate survey and assists in determining initiatives to support diverse populations.

I also believe it is the role of the committee to inform the association of perceived and real barriers for inclusion and make recommendations on improvements. To that end, I would like to continue our conversation from the 2018 annual conference meeting regarding inclusive practices in presenting at the conference culminating in tangible recommendations for adoption throughout NACADA.  Further, I hope to engage NACADA leadership in discussion around...

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
A career highlight and accomplishment I am proud of is leading the development of a comprehensive student support center at my university. Upon being hired, I was tasked with consolidating several existing student support units as well as developing new initiatives aimed at improving retention and persistence. I worked throughout a year to garner institutional support and buy-in for new initiatives while developing relationships with key stakeholders. The result has been the creation of a comprehensive center including academic advising, learning support, internships, experiential learning, high-impact educational practices, and co-located services such as study abroad and high-achieving scholar programs.

Through this experience, I learned how to navigate a large organization while advocating for the areas I oversee. The experience enabled me to refine skills in relationship building, partnerships, and creating consensus. The experience also provided an opportunity to learn operational...

I am interested in serving in this leadership position because I believe in and value the work of the committee in strengthening the association. Through this role, I can give back to an association that has supported my personal and professional development for several years. 4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
As committee chair, I will continue the work I have begun as a member of the committee to promote inclusion throughout the association. This work is accomplished through ongoing conversation with members of the association that are consistent and informed by best practices. As a member of the LGBTQIA community, I recognize the importance of representation at all levels of the association. I will consistently advocate for all facets of diversity including both seen and unseen aspects of each of our lived experiences to ensure the association is meeting the needs of its members. Through diverse perspectives, we grow as individuals and as an association. Our challenge is to bring these perspectives to the forefront of everyone’s mind when building upon the successes of our association. If elected, I look forward to championing these efforts.
