I feel passionately that appreciative advising is essential to our profession. In my role as chair of the Appreciative Advising Community, I would use my background as a certified appreciative advisor and co-facilitator of the online course to promote NACADA’s strategic goals.

My goals as chair of the Appreciative Advising Community would include:

• Creating, maintaining, and contributing to an online platform where members can share resources, successes, and challenges
• Promoting a focus on the use of Appreciative Advising from a more critical and social justice based lens
• Promoting appreciative advising professional development opportunities (both online and in person)

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
As newer member of the academic advising community, I have been taking every opportunity to expand my knowledge and experience in the profession. This has included leading various project on my campus, such as Start On Track On Campus, our first year orientation day. Under the supervision of the Senior Advisor on Retention and Director, Student Academic Success, my team invited students and parents to campus for a full-day event in alignment with CAS standards and Lizzio’s Five-Senses Model.

Leading this team was a significant undertaking and I’m extremely proud of what we were able to accomplish. In particular, working with my team members, identifying their strengths, and setting them up for success was extremely rewarding. Additionally, because we planned the event with assessment in mind, the data we gained will be invaluable in shaping and growing the event in the future.

Outside of this event, I am also chair of the communications committee for our university’s professional...

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
Advising needs to be built on a strong student relationship. Appreciative advising is, in my opinion, the best framework for building that foundational relationship. The opportunity to promote this approach and help my colleagues be the most effective advisers they can be is what drove my to apply for this role.

There are so many rich stories and experiences across the world—I want to create a space and platform where those stories can be shared, where we can learn from each other, where we can work to provide the best possible service to students in our care.

Although I recognize that I am relatively new to NACADA and the profession, I know I will thrive in this leadership role. I have a specific vision for this Community and I know how to harness the strengths of my team to achieve that vision. I can’t wait to get started.

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I recognize the importance of creating an environment that is inclusive and equitable. I have been privileged to work in an office that holds social justice as a guiding tenet and I have seen first-hand how these principles relate to appreciative advising and its work around inclusivity.

In addition to my knowledge of and experiences within the LGBTQ+ community, I am involved in ongoing work to understand the lived experience of Indigenous people and people of colour. I do not identify as a member of either group, so educating myself and seeking out and listening to the stories of those who do, is essential to ensuring I provide the best possible service to my students and do no harm.

By creating a community where these values are prioritized and foundational to our work, we can create a space that is empowering and enriching for all members.

     b. National Offices Help and Accomplishments Achieved

My past involvement in NACADA has been limited, but I am very eager to increase my activity. I have been a member for one year and I was part of a team that received a certificate of merit for Outstanding Advising Program at the 2018 National Conference. I am also a member of the Appreciate Advising Community and the LGBTQA Advising and Advocacy Community.
