Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
Although I have been a part of the Advising Community on Career Advising as it has transitioned through formats, I have not found it to be an adequate resource for my career advising work with students. I would like to change that.

To begin, I would like to establish a steering committee to assist with efforts in building the community, which addresses strategic goal #5. Additionally, I would like to develop consistent use of technology to outreach and foster communication, and build and coordinate resources to address strategic goal #7. These initial efforts would be leveraged to meet the remaining strategic goals of the Association.

My aim, if elected Advising Community on Career Advising Chair, would be to engage the community to offer resourceful professional development to advisors that have career development responsibilities. Understanding that career advising may look different at institutions that are a part of the Association; it is imperative that we utilize each other...

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
I co-host a bi-annual webinar for advisors on preparing students for careers in the global marketplace. This program attracts attendees from across the globe, and in a variety of higher education institutions and roles, all student-facing. Evaluations indicate the webinar is consistently well-regarded; and I get individual feedback from participants that express the desire for more information and more activity that offers insight and resources for helping students navigate academic, career, personal and professional endeavors.

This webinar is simply the current platform that I use to elevate the importance of career advising, along with advisor training and development in the academic advising space. I stepped into career development to fill a void for students in the department I was advising. With successful career programs, and partnering with campus units to meet students career development needs, I was asked to lead career initiatives at the college level, and was subsequently...

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
I want to offer active and engaged leadership to this Advising Community on Career Advising. I also want to learn from my peers that are doing outstanding work in career advising. As my career has evolved, I've initiated more career and professional development programming to support students. I've since been certified as a Global Career Development Facilitator and Certified Career Services Provider, and want to help educate and equip academic advisors in meeting student inquiries and needs in this area.

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
I welcome involvement from members across the Association. Diversity of thought should be acknowledged as we all bring our distinctions to our work, and to the Association. Awareness and communication are important in promoting and practicing inclusion. Collaboration, productivity, constructive conflict, and healthy debate are among the signs of inclusion I look for as we bring ideas to problem solve for this community. I aim to be mindful and accountable in supporting my peers in the Advising Community for Career Advising and will look to the Inclusion and Engagement Committee to foster engagement across the Association.
