Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
I will attempt to accomplish the objective of engaging all NACADA members in an effort to foster inclusive practices by showing them what diversity and inclusion looks like. Whether you are from a small school or a large school, be it technical, community colleges, minority serving institutions, or predominantly white institutions, inclusion and engagement is an important part of what we do in serving students and is paramount to the advising profession and our association. I will attempt to engage our association members what it means to be included and engaged by being part of something where they feel their presence and contributions are valued.  I plan to help our members from the various regions understand the benefits of being part of a diverse community and to assist them in developing behavioral skills, self-care and respect in inclusive spaces. My aim is to engage members from all backgrounds and experiences, to explore concepts of allyship, identity, bias, power, privilege, and...

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
My selection as one of 10 Emerging Leader to the Class of 2016-2018 Emerging Leaders Program. Considering the number of applicants, who apply annually and I was named as one of the participants still makes me feel special today.  I am proud of the fact that I applied once and was selected. My other accomplishment I would like to mention was when I won the Advising Excellence Award for the 2016-2017 academic year at my institution. I became the first male and the first African American who have won this award to date after only three years in advising. I became an Academic Advisor in the College of Arts & Sciences at Florida Gulf Coast University in 2013.  These accomplishments demonstrate that I am capable of leading. I have acquired, honed, and developed leadership skills that are transferrable to positions in our association. I have taken on leading roles in various initiatives without having the necessary experience. A typical example is taking on the leading role of presenting an ELP...

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
I am interested in serving in this leadership position because I am passionate about serving and giving back to NACADA. I feel strongly that this association has invested in my growth and development through the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP). I view the ELP as something that is dedicated to our success to spread our wings and grow as it relates to leadership in NACADA.  The objectives of the program provided me with the lived experience in the form of a mentor/mentee relationship in lifting each other as we ascend to new levels of leadership within NACADA. This program has provided an avenue for me to build upon my leadership strengths and to learn new ways to achieve greater impact. The ELP is a dynamic program, which has facilitated and has allowed me to learn all of the critical elements that successful leaders must master to deliver results, including how to set goals, build and inspire teams, and drive change. For these reasons, I am grateful that I was selected to be a participant...

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
I would like to focus on six goals during my tenure to promote and enhance inclusivity throughout our association.
Encourage NACADA members to pay attention to and get rid of some of the verbiage we use in our correspondences and literatures which can be deemed offensive. This would include NACADA publications, webinars, proposal abstracts.
Increase the level of awareness and sensitivity related to trigger words, which may appear to offend members within our association.
Make our members feel more engaged during NACADA events and feel involved in spaces where there are fewer of those faces.
Fostering inclusivity related to personal and professional networks within NACADA and across institution types regardless of sizes and affiliations.
Providing personalized information and resources that promote professional growth and development.
Encouraging a sense of community and greater involvement within NACADA with the understanding that our association’s banner is big enough to...
