Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
On the NACADA survey that was recently distributed, the Region structure was outlined there by three components:  Networking, Professional Development and Leadership.  If elected, I would attempt to accomplish three keys goals within that structure:  Mentorship and Support though formalized networking opportunities where new members can be mentored by a more seasoned member of the region; Membership Recognition and Publication by increasing our region award nomination submissions on both the regional and international level as well as encouraging and promoting advisors in all seasons of their career to submit for publication to Academic Advising Today, the Clearinghouse or the NACADA Journal; and Meeting together through professional development activities and systemized communication pathways in an effort to provide leadership support for our newly elected region leadership positions so they are better able to complete their role’s responsibilities and meet the needs of our region’s...

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
There are several NACADA related accomplishments of which I am proud.  I was the Chair of the 2018 Region 3 Conference committee, which was a two year undertaking; but I didn’t do it all by myself.  I had a wonderful team of advising professionals not only in my office and on campus, but also across the region that made the conference happen and happen well.  I think this speaks to my leadership because I recognize that nothing great can be accomplished alone and the success of that conference was because of the strengths, ideas, creativity, and dedication of many people that pursued the same goal.
Secondly, another accomplishment of which I am proud, is developing the Region 3 Award Selection Criteria rubrics, which have been passed on to other regions and has been adopted and subsequently amended to use when reviewing award nomination packets on the global level.  This activity speaks to my leadership in that I value the importance of the awards available to advisors on the regional...

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
The bottom line is, I am an Achiever.  A Do-er.  I love to learn and grow in my professional life and I love to make things happen. Since the advent of my work in academic advising in August 2000, I have consistently tried to be better than the season before. Initially, this growth was in my daily work life, but in the last five to ten years, I have looked outside of my daily work to the work of the region and the profession in a more formal way.  Now, not only do I want to be better every day, I want our region to be better as well, which contributes to the larger functioning of the global organization.  I have benefited personally and professionally in many ways from what NACADA has offered over the years and I want to continue to contribute to its good work by taking on more formalized leadership within the organization so that others can benefit as well.

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
I would like to start with a needs assessment not only based on the goals mentioned herein, but also to find out where our region needs to grow in this area.  I think that starts with conversation.  We need to identify what the barriers are before we can work to be strategic about how we would overcome them.  I think our State Liaisons would be great partners in talking with people from their states about how to better promote inclusive practices and programs.

5. Outline your past involvement in NACADA:
     a. Years in NACADA
     b. National Offices Help and Accomplishments Achieved

I have been a member of NACADA since the fall 2000.  I have attended drive-in, regional and annual conferences in one or more capacities during those years since.  I’ve presented or co-presented concurrent sessions for most of them.  Because of my work on the Awards Selection Rubrics, I was invited to participate on the Association’s Awards Committee beginning at the NACADA 2107 Annual Conference, which I happily accepted.  I attended the NACADA Summer Institute in 2014 in Clearwater, FL and was a Harriet Hurt Travel Award Scholarship recipient in 2016 to attend the Region 3 Conference in spring 2017 in Raleigh, NC. And as mentioned, I was the Chair of the 2018 Region 3 Conference in May in Charleston, SC.  I joined the Region 3 Steering Committee the year prior to my serving as conference chair, which is part of the conference chair rotation on and off that committee.
