Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
If elected as Chair of the Career Advising Community, I would like to enhance the role the steering committee has within the community. This would allow an opportunity for more individuals to engage and potentially provide another pathway into NACADA leadership roles.

I would work to continue to grow the number of presentations offered at NACADA conferences specific to career advising. This fall, I was able to participate in the first career advising panel at the annual conference. I would like to see more opportunities for open dialogue between members about career advising and best practices on a variety of platforms.

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
As the Assistant Director of the Academic Advising and Career Exploration Center, I am responsible for the coordination and execution of the annual Majors and Graduate Programs Fair. This is an annual event that began in 2008. When I took over the event in 2010, attendance was less than 50 students and academic departments did not see the value in the event. Over the last eight years, annual attendance has grown to almost a 1,000 students, a 45% average annual growth rate.

Attendance has increased due to expanded efforts in communication and collaboration, two key pieces to successful leadership. I have worked with individuals in Academic Affairs and Student Affairs to engage both students and faculty in career advising conversations. I have solicited feedback and made noted changes to processes to better meet the needs of engaged individuals. I have sought collaboration with entities that help promote student success and help to bring value to the student experience at the fair.

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
NACADA and the advising communities have provided me a variety of opportunities for professional growth and development. I feel that it is time to give back to the Association and help provide the same types of opportunities for other professionals.

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
Career advising is not a one dimensional area and neither are the individuals providing this service. Inclusivity allows faculty and professional advisors to better collaborate and develop best practices as well as inform our practice in working with diverse student populations.

It is important to make sure career advising conversations include the perspective of a diverse population (including but not limited to ethnicity, institutional type, advising model, student population, accessibility). To do this, a variety of platforms will be pursued to engage as many perspectives as possible.
