Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
This small community can foster many opportunities to assist NACADA in achieving its strategic goals. Given the opportunity to lead this community, I will attempt to assist NACADA to achieve its strategic objectives as follows:
1 – Understanding that the role of graduate and professional student advisors often expands to include: transfer credit evaluation, admissions and recruitment, experiential learning, and academic support services, a member driven referendum to define the depth and scope of this community can be conducted.
2 – Promote much needed scholarship in post-baccalaureate and graduate student success leveraging a group research approach. A personal area of interest is profiling graduate transfer students.
3 -Create a sharing community of best practices leveraging a variety of communication channels to encourage member sharing. Leverage behavioral nudging to promote engagement.
4 – Work to identify NACADA programming and professional development opportunities,...

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
Leading a comprehensive overhaul of advisement at Lehman College. In a nutshell, advisement was occurring in over 20 administrative offices across the college and all 40 academic departments. As culture change makes people feel apprehensive at best and terrified at worst, planning this initiative in a way that encourages inclusiveness was of key importance.

Work began on this initiative by asking each of our five key advising areas and faculty from each of our five schools to serve on our academic advising committee. The committee asked each of our administrative units and schools to present their advising approach leveraging a SWOT analysis approach. The information shared in these presentations coupled with a review of local and national best practices allowed the committee to reimagine advising at the college.

Results of the committee were shared broadly with opportunities for input from the entire college community leveraging a 360 degree approach occurred at numerous intervals....

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
My decision to run for this position is simple. I am committed to the success of Graduate and Professional Students and to the success of NACADA. Over the course of the past five years I have participated and/or presented at conferences sponsored by NACADA, NAGAP, Noel Levitz, and ACT. While each of these conferences and organizations have their own merits NACADA stands out to me as the organization which focuses on operationalizing theoretical frameworks to bring about enhanced student outcomes.

Engaging and growing the existing professional and graduate student advisor community within NACADA is important and relies on understanding the diversity of the roles and responsibilities of the community members and potential members. As a leader of this group, I am confident that I bring the proper mix of graduate level program development, admissions, marketing, advising, and policy development experiences to initiate interesting initial conversations relating to graduate student success....

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
I believe that NACADA has made great strides in improving inclusivity. The homepage of the Inclusion and Engagement Committee speaks for itself.

In addition to the work and suggestions of the NACADA Inclusion and Engagement Committee, I would focus on four initiatives to promote a sense of inclusivity of professional and graduate student advisors in the larger organization:

1 – Prepare to embrace the next generation of community members leveraging communication and engagement mechanisms to encourage their involvement while not leaving other generations behind.
2 – Identify opportunities for Professional and Graduate Advisor Community members to gain transferable skills from presentations not directly related to students that we serve. This is particularly important at conferences.
3 – Build a culture of collaborative research and information sharing to better understand graduate and professional student services within our community.
4 – Expand the scope of our discussion...

5. Outline your past involvement in NACADA:
     a. Years in NACADA
     b. National Offices Help and Accomplishments Achieved

I have been a proud member of NACADA for a number of years spanning two institutions. During my tenure as a member, I have either presented/co-presented a number of presentations at the regional and national level. As a co-presenter I am particularly proud of the fact that I partnered with junior employees who had never presented before to help them gain exposure. I have also dedicated limited professional development resources under my discretion to allow staff to attend local NACADA events. For the past two years I have also participated as a conference proposal reviewer.
