Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
Advising student athletes is a unique task because they have unique issues and challenges that traditional students do not face given the time commitments, travel, and pressure required of playing a sport at the collegiate level. Some advisors focus solely on advising athletes while others advise athletes as part of their standard caseload.  A focus on inclusive best practices that can assist advisors in helping students develop their own identity beyond the field of play is of paramount importance. If elected to this position, I would encourage the expansion of scholarship (articles, presentations, etc.) within NACADA on advising this population, promote the development of best practices for advising athletes, and encourage the expansion and development of programming and training for those who advise athletes or would like to become more knowledgeable on this topic.

Platform Statement: Part II

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
As a faculty advisor, I work with students both in and out of the classroom.  As an first year advisor, I have worked with student athletes on multiple teams assisting them in their transitions from high school to life at the university.  As a professor of education teaching courses on bullying and behavior, student athletes have made up a significant portion of the students in my classes.  While I have accomplished much in my career as an advisor and teacher (including developing programming initiatives that have been highlighted by Harvard University, presenting and publishing scholarly data, or developing courses that students find enjoyable and engaging), nothing compares to seeing the success of the student that I serve.  I’ve watched as former advisees and students graduate and move on to do great things in their careers (including careers in professional sports). Their success gives me hope that what I’ve done and accomplished in some small way has had an impact.

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
My primary influences in seeking this position are twofold: 1.) I’m interested in contributing more the the advising community, particularly those who advise student athletes. I’ve been working in this field for 17 years and I believe that I have a lot of institutional and career knowledge of the profession that might be useful to those who share our passion for assisting students.   2.) I’m interested in continuing to find ways to help our students be successful.  One way in which I can help do this beyond my own advising and teaching is to help lead the development of best practices, contribute to the scholarly work, and help mentor those within the profession.

Platform Statement: Part IV

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
Inclusiveness is important to any endeavor-- those belonging to an organization or group need to feel as if they belong and are included in the process and development of the organization.  Inclusion as been integral to my work and career from assisting LGBT+ students feel belonging at the institution, becoming a certified college instructor of the Green Dot national bystander awareness program, and facilitating discussions and conversations on behavior and issues of national importance.  I would seek to continue this work in a leadership role in NACADA.
