1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
With the restructuring of the Advising Communities, NACADA is ideally positioned to form a more collaborative and inclusive organization. As an ELP Mentor, chair of the Technology in Advising Community, and a member of several advisory boards, I have come to care deeply for the values, camaraderie, and mission of NACADA. I have spoken with quite a few NACADA members and communities who have great ideas, want to get involved, present, or do research. However, unless someone helps them navigate the system, it can be difficult to get involved and some members feel their voices aren’t being heard. If elected to Advising Communities Division Representative position, I would work for more member involvement and input at all levels. First, I would strive to be responsive to the advising community division’s needs and advocate for a transparent communicative approach to engaging with members, making sure each voice is heard and that goals are easily accessible. I have worked toward this in the Technology in Advising Community. Secondly, I would encourage the cluster representatives and advising community chairs to share best practices and find better ways to collaborate and support one another. This is something that I’ve championed in pushing for collaborative consultation models among communities. Lastly, I would encourage creativity and innovation as a model for the advising communities, which celebrates creative thought, diverse ideas, and out of the box thinking.

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
I am very proud of the collaborative work I have done regionally with Western New York (WNY) Advising and globally with NACADA. As a professional academic advisor, I have put a lot of effort into building bridges among academic advisors that transcend institutional and regional boundaries. I’ve found it important to model the foundational, intermediate, and advanced ways that technology and social media can connect students, faculty, and academic advisors. Holding various leadership positions within WNY Advising over the past 11 years, I helped develop a strong team of professionals from the United States and Canada, who have planned multiple advising, diversity, and technology related conferences. Overall, the WNY Advising successes illustrate the power of networking and social media as ways of bringing people together and developing leaders. It has taught me the importance of focusing on collaborative leadership, something that has helped me as I transitioned into my roles at NACADA....

As chair of the Technology in Advising Community, I’ve built upon the lessons I learned in WNY Advising to create collaborative Google documents to better share our goals and encourage involvement among our members and across various advising communities. This idea of leading humbly and working with others has definitely shaped my career is something that I hope would provide valuable to the Advising Communities Division.

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
The connections I’ve made through the Technology in Advising community and AcAdvChat have been invaluable to me professionally. Reflecting upon my time as chair and a mentor for ELP, I have been so very lucky to have been mentored and supported by others in the NACADA community. This is especially true of the collaborations that I have been a part of with other communities, regions, and individuals within the organization. It is my hope that if elected, I can build upon my successes as chair, and give back to help others engage and grow as active members and leaders within NACADA. In addition to my NACADA experiences, I have spent a lot of time bringing others together for professional development. I served as co-chair and chair of multiple WNY Advising conferences, and currently serve as the executive coordinator for their website and as the point person for developing partnerships with other organizations. Through these endeavors, I have achieved more than I could have hoped for regionally, with an annual WNY Advising conference of over 200 advisors, biennial specialized conferences, and a distribution list of more than 500 advisors. I hope to bring the skills and insights that I have learned from NACADA and WNY Advising to help the Advising Communities Division to grow and develop.

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
I strongly support inclusivity and social justice and would bring that to my role if elected. My master’s thesis focused on ally development while my dissertation examined faculty multicultural competence and practices. I have a long history of presenting on social justice topics on my campus, WNY Advising, and NACADA. I have presented on faculty multicultural competence and practices, bell hooks, and campus protest. I also am exploring the connections between technology and multicultural competence. Professionally, I closely with faculty, student affairs professionals, and multicultural students on my campus to support diversity and inclusivity initiatives. I have infused diversity into my undergraduate course on sociology of higher education, serve on my campus diversity committee, and am a Title IX Civil Rights Investigator. From a more personal angle, I spend a lot of time reflecting on my own privilege, prejudices, and responsibilities as an individual and as a professional. As...

As both the parent of a daughter and a transracially adopted son and as an advising professional with over 19 years of experience, it is very important for me to remain engaged in discussions of inclusivity and diversity, because others may not have a choice to disengage. My work with professionals within NACADA, AcAdvChat, and WNY Advising has given me a strong appreciation of perspectives beyond my own, and I hope to listen and support those voices in my work with the association.

5. Outline your past involvement in NACADA:
a. Years in NACADA
b. National Offices Help and Accomplishments Achieved
I joined NACADA in 2002, attending a region 4 conference.. I scaled back my involvement while pursuing my Ph.D. in higher education administration, returning briefly in 2009 and fully in 2014 when I hosted a Region 3 pre-conference workshop. In 2014, I joined the Technology in Advising Community Steering Committee and became a moderator for Academic Advising Chat (@acadvchat). In 2015, I joined the Technology Advisory Board. I have regularly presented with colleagues at the annual conferences since then, including multiple hot topics and tech labs. One session, Advising to Transgress: Reflections on the language of bell hooks, was selected as a Theory, Philosophy, & History Community Sponsored Session in 2016. Shortly thereafter I founded the #SAProArt group with NACADA colleagues, culminating in a well received session on creativity, art and innovation in advising in 2018. In 2017 I began my term as chair of the Technology in Advising community, worked on the team that helped develop...

I also joined the Emerging Leaders Program as a Mentor. On a fun note, I was pleased to be awarded “most creative poster” at the Advising Communities Fair in Phoenix. Most recently, I was asked to be the Western New York Sub-Liason for Region 1. In all these positions, I have strived to find ways to collaborate with colleagues across the globe and hope to continue doing so well into the future.
