Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
I believe that the image and reputation of NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising is grounded by our individual members and collective membership.  My responsibility will be to listen to voices, to stories, and to understand perspectives with an open and growth-centered mindset; ultimately, to be a guide in facilitating an environment of opportunity, and an active and engaged membership to accomplish our strategic goals.  My leadership with the NACADA Membership Recruitment & Retention Committee, through the Iowa Academic Advising Network and as Director of the Office of Academic Advising at Northern Iowa, has enabled me to develop a perspective and context of “persistence” as the cornerstone of my personal drive.  Like with our students, we must establish a belief in one’s ability to succeed, to have a sense of belonging, and to value the association at both an individual and collective level.

I will take in information from not only my perspective, but with the goal...

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
I am a founding member of the Iowa Academic Advising Network (IowaAAN) celebrating its 10th anniversary in April 2019.  The network began as a collaborative NACADA Region 6 concurrent session presented by me and two colleagues from institutions in Iowa – and is now a NACADA Allied Member and a recognized 501c(3) organization.  I have served on the vision/leadership team since its inception and I am a currently our Vice-President and on the Board of Directors.

As a team member, a leader, and an officer, I have demonstrated my commitment to the growth and success of this organization and most importantly for the benefit of its members.  The IowaAAN was founded to establish a collaborative professional environment, enhance the level of recognition of academic advising, and promote quality academic advising throughout the state.  I have been purposeful and intentional in building collaboration and inclusion in all aspects, activities, and events of the network as well as with its leadership.

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
I believe that each member should write their own story to their involvement and leadership in NACADA.  My path has been unique in scope, but my engagement has allowed me to work in collaboration with areas and with individuals from all three divisions and leadership of NACADA.  I want NACADA to be inclusive and representative to all, and to be the “place” for all serving in a role in the academic advising profession.  Following my 1st term as chair of the Membership Recruitment & Retention Committee, I saw a need for a re-visioning of goals to be more productive and effective, and have a greater impact to those benefiting from our efforts.  This motivation prompted me to accept a 2nd term to lead the transformation in our vision - with a focus on helping individuals find connection and community with NACADA and promoting involvement opportunities that would lead to enhanced engagement and responsibility.  I continue to build on this thinking with the Sustainable Leadership Committee...

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
For NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising to be successful and inclusive, we must
1. Create an environment for open and honest discussions;
2. Have diversity in culture, background, experience, perspectives, and ideas represented in leadership positions;
3. Have representatives in leadership positions for which each member can relate to their own beliefs or ideology;
4. Look beyond the numbers of membership and involvement.

I need to be open and listen to understand others with my perspective from a privileged position.  We must meet the needs of a diverse and growing profession, and to support the inclusivity efforts at our higher education institutions.  Furthermore, we must build understanding and commonalities in the profession of academic advising as practiced throughout the world.

Our human capital is the foundation for our and success and our greatest asset.  Similar to the active-oriented and proactive environment created in the Membership Committee, we must...
