Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
Over the past number of years, NACADA has been asking itself how to ensure that all its members have the opportunity to engage with the association, ensure that the leadership reflects the membership and how to provide meaningful leadership development. To this end, a number of initiatives started, including the creation of the Sustainable Leadership Committee. Under the leadership of Casey Self, the Committee was charged with the creation of a leadership academy. Throughout the first few years of the Committee, much time was spent on discussing what this could look like, what were the needs of the association, its members and for sustainable leadership. Over the past two years, under the leadership of Janet Spence, we have moved from discussing, to doing. As a committee, we have worked on the development and creation of a curriculum, specifically tailored to different leadership paths within the association. We are currently at a crossroads with the committee. Understanding the needs of...

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
I have been privileged throughout my career to lead strong teams who are dedicated and passionate to the field of advising and to Student Affairs. I have found that throughout the years, my leadership style has changed, and focus more and more on the relational component. I try to lead with compassion and understanding. I want to appreciate where people are coming from. I want to hear their stories and build upon their strengths. I want to be fair, transparent and I want to be inclusive. I want to try and understand each unique voice, and I want to seek to understand. To demonstrate my abilities as a leader through an accomplishment I am proud of, is an experience I had on my campus over this year and a half. I was lucky enough, through donor dollars, to have the opportunity to lead the opening of a new student success centre on my campus. The vision of the Centre was to provide intentional, developmental advising. The institution recognized the importance of intentional advising for students,...

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
Having been a member of the Sustainable Leadership Committee for the past number of years, I have seen the ebbs and flows of this committee and have been part of the monumental task of creating a leadership curriculum for the association. This past year in particular, I saw the amount of thought, dedication and commitment that was put forth by the committee to developing the curriculum, assessment plan and outcomes for NLEP. I also heard the frustrations at the Annual Conference meeting when it felt like the work of the committee wasn’t in the direction the Board hoped. I have appreciated Janet’s leadership of this committee over the past number of years and want to continue her good work. I am running for this position because I feel like I can help to bring together the vision of the Board with the reality of what NLEP could become. I have been privileged to be part of a program, ELP, that was created by another committee (the then Diversity Committee) and have experienced first-hand...

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
Involvement, just like leadership, looks different for everyone. However, I want NACADA to be place where people feel that they are represented and have the opportunity to participate in the way that is right for them. I want to help increase the understanding of how NACADA defines diversity, and ensure collaboration among all the divisions, committees, advising communities and advisory boards, aimed at creating opportunities and awareness for the membership. I will continue to lead the best way I know how, continuing to look at ways to engage all members…not just those that have the most opportunities or connections. I know that NACADA leadership is passionate about ensuring that the organization is inclusive, and I feel like I can continue this level of passion, as it is something very personal to me. I feel that I have been very vocal about my thoughts around inclusivity with the Association and this is not done from a place of derision, but rather, wanting to be take a critical lens...
