Community Chairs are elected by their Community members and provide leadership for Community activities in support of the profession by representing its members and their needs and concerns through the Division Representatives and communicating with the members. Community Chairs coordinate community activities and lead Community meetings during the Annual Conference. Community Chairs report to the Division Representatives for the Advising Communities Division (ACD). HBCU Chair - (elected, term October 2019-October 2021). Prior to taking office, candidates must have completed the previous year as a member in the Community and be a current member in that group.

Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
If elected to this position, I will work to ensure the academic advising practices at Historically Back Colleges and Universities provide guidance and support to students to make informed choices about their education, excel academically and cultivate life skills critical to timely graduation, responsible citizenship and career success.  In addition, I will work with other institutions to develop partnerships to leverage best practices to best serve students of color at all colleges and universities throughout the United States.

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
Currently, I am Executive Director of the Charles Hamilton Houston Foundation, Inc. an academic, leadership and professional development nonprofit organization that provides a continuum of programs, services and mentorship to educate, engage, empower and equip young men of color to successfully navigate college to career to become high-results leaders in corporations, government, nonprofits and entrepreneurial ventures.  I have developed and sustained positive relationships to serve as a mentor and coach to over 137 young men of color in college to identify their career pathway and align their college experience to develop the skills, competences and experiences necessary for career success.  I provide one-on-one communication regarding internship opportunities which include all application requirements and work with students to ensure compliance to maximize the possibility of internship and employment placement. 3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
I am interested in serving in this leadership position to promote detailed research and evidence-based strategies to understand how to best recognize, understand and remedy oppressive barriers and implicit bias in advising students of color to develop equity-mindedness to transform mindsets, skills, and actions necessary to catalyze meaningful and lasting systemic change . We must leverage equity-minded change leadership to advance transformative change in academic advising structures, policies, cultural norms and practices to employ equity strategies to address inequities in the outcomes and experiences of students of color. I am committed to working with all institutions to develop academic advising practices and strategies to disrupt normative practices that contribute to inequities and implement supportive and diverse options which leverage assets and strengths to prepare students of color for academic and professional success.

I will work collaboratively, cooperatively and transparently with all members of the association through open dialogue, listening to recommendations and working to develop best practices to achieve the best possible outcomes through academic advising strategies and methodologies.
