Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
As a premier goal, I would work with the Research Center and AC Division Chairs under my leadership to expand and communicate the scholarship of academic advising with undergraduate, graduate, and professional student populations. I would utilize my own skills and experience to assist the advising communities in elevating their efforts and accomplishments through effective and ongoing assessment. Yet, it is important to understand the needs of academic advisors and administrators in the division. This requires consistent environmental scans and effective communication with opens lines for feedback through the hierarchy of leadership. These inclusive practices are congruent with the NACADA strategic goal to foster inclusive practices that respect the principle of equity and diversity. I consider it paramount in my professional journey to give back and share my knowledge with others by helping new leaders advance in their own careers. This will ultimately lead to the advancement of the NACADA...

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
I am very proud of my leadership over the last year as an advising community chair of the Advising Community on Advising Graduate and Professional Students. I am proud to say that I started at the bottom learning how to be become an effective NACADA leader from the ground up. While there is still more to learn and opportunity to grow, this past year as AC chair, I grew tremendously. I believe this experience will serve well in mentoring future leaders to follow. Prior to the 2018 Annual Conference, I was asked by senior leadership to take on the task of serving as Chair following the merger of two advising communities. This increased my leadership responsibilities as AC Chair and also required me to navigate difficult conversations with concerned constituents following the merger. This accomplishment demonstrates my commitment to my colleagues as well as the organization. It also exhibits my work ethic to go above and beyond what is expected to advance the strategic goals of NACADA.

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
After considerable consideration, I decided this next step is the right place for me professionally to give to others and also to advance the NACADA organization. I meet the requirement for experience as Chair within the Division and believe the Chairs whom I represent will find me to be an effective leader with devout integrity. I expect this role requires intense accessibility as well as trust that the concerns and desires of AC members and Chairs will be carried up to the NACADA Council. While my leadership experience on the national level is brief, it is also recent enough to understand the on-boarding and transition needs of future AC Chairs. I am determined to contribute to the effective transition of leadership through my work in this role. I see this position as a bridge between grassroots membership and senior leadership of the organization, which I believe is a very important and vital place to hold.  Because of this belief, I am committed to this task and all that is required....

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
Inclusivity is a complex construct; wherein, we must not only consider demographic characteristics of leaders themselves, but also the inclusion of diverse thoughts and belief systems. We must also consider key tenets of intersectionality and complexities of identity. This is paramount to thriving organizations. Often, I have found many to mentor others who look and think like themselves. In this role, I will work to advance the vision and mission of NACADA and to develop and sustain effective Association leadership by working to advance difference.

I believe leaders are made and not born. The practice of transformational leadership is an effective approach that is reciprocal in nature where both leaders and followers raise one another to higher levels of development. While not all desire a specific role in leadership, we all take on some form of leadership in our lives from time to time. I will work through this leadership approach to promote inclusivity by serving as a role model;...
