Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association? (1500 characters or less)
Understanding an association is only as strong as it members, a focal point will be on growing the commission. While we have highly engaged participation from a core of members, I believe it is imperative that we consistently are growing the commission, as there are more and more practitioners in this field. Increasing the commission’s membership will enable the commission to keep the strong connection to critical areas of need in academic advising student athletes, such as scholarly research and theory development. While most of us are practitioners in the field, expanding our commission to work with the NACADA Center for Research at Kansas State University to gather baseline metrics that can become a guide to informed best practices would help the viability of our commission work. Developing an action plan that will help increase the membership through various connection and collaboration points (NCAA-NACADA Advisory boars, N4A, AERA, etc) we can ensure that we strengthen the purposeful...

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader? (1500 characters or less)
As an educator first, I believe the successful matriculation of students is the most important accomplishment I could ever be apart of. However, if I had to choose one it could be when I worked for a an institution where I was charged to implement a comprehensive athletic academic support unit (Advising, tutoring, study strategies, etc). I worked with campus support units to holistically provide student development initiatives. Through that work, our athletic department was recognized by the NCAA DII Presidents Council for being in the top 10% of all DII schools in Graduation Success Rates. This award signified our efforts of making academics the priority in our department and most importantly with our students. The recognition demonstrated the commitment to excellence that we were able to bring together with the resources we had. I feel my ability to articulate my passion transfers and ignites others into action!

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position? (1500 characters or less)
“On a personal level, I would like to continue to develop my organizational leadership skills. I want to become more involved with NACADA through more regional involvement and eventually I want to chair the Advising Student-Athlete Commission.”

This is the statement I submitted in 2013, when I applied for the Wesley R. Habley NACADA Summer Institute Scholarship. Serving in this capacity became my goal as I was just starting my active professional career working specifically with student-athletes. I knew I had found a specialized population I wanted to serve and I continue to strive to learn more through active participation in NACADA and it’s partnering associations. I believe I will be able to translate what I have learned since then about the advising practices, the sports industry, and my involvement with NACADA into the collective efforts the commission decided to put forth.

4. Please describe how you will work to promote the enhancement of inclusivity throughout (or within) the association. (1500 characters or less)
With "Diversity" and "Inclusion" being on the forefront of institutions, organizations and associations agendas, I believe it is critical that not only are we (any group) desiring diversity in appearance but also in valued perspective. Identifying with one of the most underrepresented populations, I am always sensitive to hearing and valuing all voices. Understanding that there is ALWAYS a goal of being able to increase the reach, in which we are inclusive of all we come in contact with on our campuses, I believe the same charge is given to the leadership. I have been a member of NACADA since 2009 and I have seen some progress in the intentional initiatives to create opportunities for all, with the desire to be inclusive and diverse. I believe serving in this capacity, I will be able to not only champion the commission's work of those we serve in the population, but also be a voice of a group who may not always have a seat at the leadership table. Creating safe spaces which encourages healthy...
