Platform Statement: Part I

1. If elected to this position, what will you attempt to accomplish that will help to meet the strategic goals of the Association?

I have been fortunate to be an active member of this Association almost my entire professional career. Due to my experiences over the past four years on the NACADA Council and currently on the Board of Directors, I have been a part of and witness to some major initiatives within NACADA. This includes going global and reaching out to our colleagues in other countries, our organizational efforts to utilize technological innovations to improve our web presence and in turn, our services to our members and our continued efforts to elevate academic advising on our college campuses by providing high quality programming for Academic Advisors, Faculty Advisors, Graduate Students, and Administrators at a low cost.

I believe my role as President is to continue the work of our past leaders. We will continue to invest our energies and resources into expanding our research agenda. We will continue to empower our members to lead the way in defining and assessing quality academic advising and connecting...

Platform Statement: Part II

2. Describe an accomplishment on your own campus or within NACADA of which you are proud. What do you believe your accomplishment demonstrates about your abilities as a leader?

I have been in my current position for over a year and a half and it is a new position on my campus. Before I got here, academic advising was decentralized and now all of the academic advisors fall under my unit. I am fortunate to have a budget that I manage and work with an amazing team of advisors. Working with advisors and administrators, our accomplishments include instituting a year long professional development calendar, funding advisors to consistently attend off-campus academic advising conferences, putting together a University-wide academic advising training manual and creating a University-wide vision, mission, and strategic goals for academic advising. Currently, we are working on cross-campus collaboration initiatives, a proposal for an Academic Advising Career Ladder and a University-wide academic advising assessment plan. These accomplishments demonstrate my strong organizational skills and my ability to achieve things in a way that is collaborative and efficient. It also...

Platform Statement: Part III

3. Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position?

When I became an advisor in 1996, I was not quite sure what I wanted to be when I grew up. I am the first in my family to go college. Higher education changed my life, as it opened doors I never knew existed and provided me opportunities I never thought were possible. My involvement on my campuses and in NACADA has helped me be the professional I am today. I am proud to work in academic advising. I love what we do and without a doubt, whether you are an advisor, administrator, faculty member, and/or graduate student, what we do is important and critical to student success.

When I attended my first NACADA conference in 1998 and saw NACADA’s leadership on the stage, I never imagined that I would have the same opportunity. In all honesty, I am still in awe of the chance to serve NACADA and academic advising in this capacity.

I want to be President because I want to continue to do my part to help take this organization and thus, academic advising, to the next level. I work well...
